Skadud-41 was a strategic bomber squadron, while Skadud-42 was more of a heavy maritime strike squadron. We already operate those Sukhoi fleet that actually do have respectable combat range (in unopposed airspace). Adding or replacing them with Su-34 will be extremely complicated matters, even with or without CAATSA

Exactly, which is why I've mentioned it several times here already. Although it's a strike fighter NOT bomber (two different term entirely with different role & capability) But in most case it will take times to retiring or transferring those Sukhoi fleet. Furthermore, we can't just transfer those Sukhoi's to anyone without the expressed consent of comrade Putin
I think it is a good idea put them on "strategic reserve" therefor they have a good range and payload as an attacker or bomber or even a recon

As I had mention earlier in this thread somewhere, the problem with keeping those Sukhoi fleet is we are wasting precious (expensive) human resources (pilots & ground crew). Even keeping those Sukhoi fleet as hangar queen cost money. Furthermore, their pilots & ground crew are best to be retrained & re qualified for new fighter (Rafale & F-15EX)

Why air force not revive 41 and 42 skuadron with SU 34 for instead, better than keep pulling G on SU 35, if we still want the russian product, not to mention again how we compare those rafale, F15 or any interceptor we (will) have, those are capabilities we need to upgrade not just a shooping list for multirole fighter
To add more from madokafc & trishna_amrta, I think the need for it is not there yet to resurect 41 & 42. We are still in the "Minimum" stage which can be translated more to defence part of the equation. Imo thats the main reason, there were talk about SU34 way back then but from our op req perspective the SU30 fill the role perfectly for now.

The "West" is moving toward West made in Europ & West made in US. You know after the Thrump era most European country realize they need to be able to depend & develop their own military industry to reduce their reliance in US products/components, this might benefit us in a long run to avoid ITAR. Russian fighter technology is getting better but wont be on par with the western for the next decade or so. As we know they are starting to market their new SU75 product as "low cost" for acquisition & maintenance, that marketing tag line shows their moving toward maintenance cost reduction & reliability but it is remain to be seen how their product will perform in real world. The future diversification choice of military product will be US version of "West", Europe version of "West", Russia & China 😁

As a mere spectator we are far too commited toward NATO standard complianced, even our Data Link system in which included Link Y, 12 and 16. Our logistic, our measurement of scale, Defense industry even down to tactical standard and sylabus of training all complianced to their standard

200 million US Dollar can bought more than 300 units R27 Missiles according to the Russian price for first batch of Indian Air Force order

the downside of ukraine R-27 is , their latest variant only available with semi active seeker compared to russian one who already had their own active radar guided variants .

oh , if our sukhoi wanted some standoff attack capability , i would recommend seek for Denel Raptor II glide bomb , those company are in dire need of anykind of revenue they could get right now , the SA govt and their own internal management is currently in really bad shape to the point of delaying their worker salary payment , if only indonesia willing to buy a bulk of them , pretty sure denel may talk about "transfer of technology" .

too bad indonesia admin didn't really catch the glimpse of the situation , if only they notice the opportunity and doing our own "Operation Paperclip" with that denel technician , it may become our stepping stone in reaching some of key technology required for our defense industry.

Not enough political will and all the wrong mindset altogether.

Money could be find IF there is enough political will and the proper mindset for it.

Well considering that most of our neighbors are NATO-based equipped, we do need compliance to such standard to ensure common interoperability between armies which are important especially considering the threat from our exact northern hemisphere

anyway i never thought that we are also starting to use Link 12 and Link 16, i thought we were still only using Link Y Mk 2 for our battlefield Datalink system
