What is Natiıonal Mission Planiing Software? What does it do on an F16?



National Mission Planning Software (NMPS) is a specialized military framework that translates strategic objectives into precise, flyable digital data for combat aircraft. For the F-16, it acts as the digital brain of the pre-flight sequence, creating comprehensive route, threat, and weapon deployment plans that are directly uploaded into the jet's avionics.

How it Works on an F-16
Before a pilot steps into the cockpit, the software automates and calculates several critical mission variables on the ground:
  • Threat Avoidance: The software maps out hostile radar envelopes, surface-to-air missile (SAM) ranges, and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) locations based on the latest intelligence, generating a route that maximizes survivability.
  • Weapon Integration: It calculates exact weapon release parameters (e.g., altitude, speed, and dive angles) for the specific bombs, missiles, or targeting pods the F-16 is carrying on a given day.
  • Navigation & Fuel Management: It plots the most efficient waypoints to and from the target, calculating highly precise fuel burn rates based on altitude, weather, and weight.
  • Avionics Upload: Once the mission is finalized, the flight plan and threat data are stored on a memory device (such as the F-16's Data Transfer Cartridge). When inserted into the F-16, this data populates the pilot’s cockpit displays, Head-Up Display (HUD), and targeting computers




Upgrades and National Variants
Due to the complexity of modern warfare, air forces frequently update their mission planning systems. For instance, companies like Lockheed Martin routinely upgrade the F-16's Joint Mission Planning System. Meanwhile, countries operating customized F-16 fleets (like the Turkish Air Force) utilize proprietary, domestically built NMPS frameworks—such as those developed by HAVELSAN—to seamlessly integrate local, indigenous smart weapons and avionics into their existing jets

Kozan Erkan says that there are many F-16 Özgurs with AESA radars under testing not just one. And despite no official deliveries they are even placed in some squadrons for training.

August 12, 2026 (by Lieven Dewitte) - A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet has crashed during a training flight in northwestern Turkey's Yalova province, with the pilot successfully ejecting and surviving the incident. The crash occurred on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, during a routine training mission at Yalova Airfield Command.

According to unconfirmed news Pakistan is after Turkish Ozgur modernisation too.



But they need US approval as neither us nor PAK can touch these planes unless US will consent.

Sound like wishful thinking!

I thought earlier blocks of F-16’s could not get a life-extension beyond 8000 hours?

Certain degrees of upgrades are possible even for block 10 aircrafts as per attached file indicates.


Structural Upgrades for Block 15
Initial Inspection: Airframes undergo thorough checks (such as PACER SLIP) to find and repair bulkhead cracks using methods like cold working.
Falcon STAR: The F-16 Structure Augmentation Roadmap provides specific modification and reinforcement parts kits to help legacy airframes reach their designed baseline flight hours.
Life Extension: These interventions repair fatigue-prone areas on wings and bulkheads, allowing older airframes to safely log thousands of additional operational flying hours.

USA approved a 600m sustainment package for the PAF fleet recently. I reckon this upgrade could get a NOC. Situation has changed from 2016.

USA approved a 600m sustainment package for the PAF fleet recently. I reckon this upgrade could get a NOC. Situation has changed from 2016.
The United States officially approved a $686 million technology upgrade and support package for Pakistan's F-16 fighter jet fleet. Announced via notification to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the deal aims to modernize existing aircraft and extend their operational lifespan through 2040. [1, 2, 3]

Package Breakdown
    • Avionics & Hardware ($649 million): Includes software updates, advanced radar integration support, navigation upgrades, spare parts, repairs, and training equipment. [1, 2, 3]
    • Tactical Systems ($37 million): Covers major defense equipment including 92 Link 16 tactical data link systems for real-time secure communication, cryptographic devices, and advanced identification friend or foe (IFF) systems. [1, 2, 3]
    • Munitions Support: Involves six inert MK 82 500 lb general-purpose bomb bodies/casings to serve as training or warhead adapters.

This is what they had said previously about the deliveries:

The project envisioned the first 15 aircraft entering the Turkish Air Force inventory in 2025, with the remaining 40 aircraft to be delivered by 2027.

Then it turned to this:

“Our current goal is to have 10 HÜRKUŞ-2s ready for delivery this year and to deliver them by the end of 2025.”

We are entering the final quarter of 2026 and they haven't delivered a single Hürkuş yet.

After 13 years of delay It would be first turkish desinged and made platform of our airforce.I hope a successful export history will come thereafter.

I remember an event in Istanbul where the chief engineer of the Hürkuş-I project was a speaker of, we chatted a few minutes after the event. He said that they developed a new airfoil for the Hürkuş. A few years later I mentioned this to a İTÜ aviation professor that I met for a project proposal and he didn't even believe they did that. A few years later in an aviation investor meeting I mentioned how the instructor pilots position is elevetad in Hürkuş and it was impressing to the investor at the meeting. And the Hürkuş development has come to a close today. It is like a journey of me following the Hürkuş development. Like the birth of a flyer that will be part of the aviation history in time.
