  • Ships had loaded crude at Saudi Arabia's Juaymah, data shows
  • Tankers were struck within minutes of each other off Oman
SINGAPORE, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Two supertankers carrying Saudi oil were struck by unknown projectiles within minutes of each other while ‌transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz late on Monday, according to shipping intelligence and tracking firms Marisks and Kpler.
"The near-simultaneous incidents represent a further escalation in the threat environment within the Omani corridor," Marisks said.

The tankers each loaded 2 million barrels of Saudi crude at the Juaymah terminal last week, Kpler data showed. Saudi Aramco resumed oil loadings and sales from inside the strait in August.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Houthis have shifted their tactics toward increasingly targeting Saudi oil facilities, likely after recognizing that their naval blockade of Saudi vessels in the Red Sea has failed to compel Saudi Arabia to meet Houthi demands in Yemen.
  2. The National Resistance Forces (NRF), which is a component of the Republic of Yemen Government (ROYG), conducted a counteroffensive in southern Hudaydah Governorate on September 5, possibly to relieve Houthi pressure on NRF forces near Taiz City. The principal challenge for the NRF will be exploiting any tactical offensive successes, however. One intermediate NRF and ROYG objective is to capture al Jarrahi, a crossroads town that lies astride a major Houthi supply line between Hudaydah City and Taiz City, and its environs.
  3. Hudaydah could be the ultimate objective of the offensive, but NRF and ROYG-aligned forces will need to seize intermediate objectives long before Hudaydah. Hudaydah is critical to both Houthi civilian and military goods, and its loss would be a significant setback for the Houthis
