    i wouldn't put the fault wholly on the army requirement. most requirement only mention weight, width, height, what gun it uses, how fast it should be, what protection level it is and the system in it. it's the manufacture job to interpret those requirement into a product.

    US army never intended to replace M119 (L118) with M777 (at least not anymore), M777 would serve as added fire power when needed. M119 also preferred by lighter unit because they can be easily moved and rapidly deployed in the field compared to M777.

    not only that the 105mm munition is smaller which mean they can carry more compared to larger 155mm munition.
