Shoton Festival is the most important festival in Tibet. It is held on the last day of the sixth month in the Tibetan calendar and falls on August 19th, 2020. Here we show you key moments of the Shoton Festival in Lhasa, Tibet. From the early morning in Drepung Monastery to the afternoon in Norbulingka, this is how the real Tibetans celebrate the Shoton Festival. The unveiling of the 500-square-meter embroidered Thangka portrait of the Buddha is the highlight of the Shoton Festival and marks the beginning of the week-long holiday. Thousands of Tibetans coming from all over Tibet to get a blessing from the holy Thangka. After the most special ceremony of the Shoton Festival, we join the locals to move on to Norbulingka to enjoy a picnic with a yogurt banquet, which is the original Tibetan meaning of ‘Shoton’.
