Regardless of political views, this is tragic. I hope the families are compensated. Obviously I don't know much about China's internal politics, but the way the AKP government in Türkiye handled previous disasters was horrible. Imagine your family member just died and you get kicked on the ground by government aligned security forces for protesting.

In the past (about ten years ago), such accidents were very frequent. Later, after authorities forcibly shut down a large number of coal mines with extremely poor safety and environmental conditions, the situation improved.
For coal miners, harsh working conditions and a lack of labor protection were the norm. Compensation for accidents often depended on the level of public exposure—if an incident drew significant attention, the payouts were substantial; otherwise, they were kept to a minimum (for example, with monthly wages of a few thousand yuan, compensation for a fatality might be only the equivalent of five to ten years' income). In the past, local governments were very active in suppressing the families of accident victims and concealing casualties. However, with the rise of social media (such as TikTok), this situation has largely disappeared.
I hope one day the work enviorment could be pushed to as same as US/EU.
