Navy Abeking & Rasmussen Cuts Steel on Indonesian MCM Vessel

Abeking & Rasmussen have started construction of the two vessels intended to replace the PULAU-RENGAT class Mine Countermeasure (MCM) ships serving in the Indonesian Navy. This marks the start of production after almost a year of design work, with specialist steel used to construct the ships. The 3D laser welding system was developed by the Lemwerder yard themselves.

The order, which was signed by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence on 29 January 2019, has a volume of US$204M (approximately €183M). The modern design of the 62m ships goes back to the FRANKENTHAL class operated by the German Navy. No details have been given on the equipment, but the vessels are likely to be equipped with state-of-the-art sonar systems and drones for MCM. Similar to the MCM mission systems used on the German Navy’s FRANKENTHAL class, MCM drones such as SEAFOX I and SEAFOX C or PENGUIN B3-ROV could be part of the equipment, in addition to a 4m inflatable boat for intervention tasks.

Both vessels are to be delivered to the client by May 2023. According to their own statements, the almost 500 shipyard employees and their boss at the shipyard in the north of Bremen are confident that they will be able to meet the tight schedule.
