It’s designed and spearheaded by NewSpace. HAL is just an add on trying to showoff. They got a good portion of funding from elsewhere after hitting a lot of red tapes within india.
HAL provided the LCA 🤣 🤣 🤣
That's enough from a govt. company.

Honestly it made sense to stick to French for propulsion matters in general.

They were instrumental in viking/vikas for ISRO dev. during the 70s/80s.

GTRE and whomever else should have just roped them in from start around that same time LCA concept was conceived in 80s too. Instead they bit off too much to chew with kabini core... they should have taken franker assessment of Indian RnD capability and application (esp for the hot section) for the time scale needed....and also not picked an american power plant to begin with as the fall-back option.

These are things just like the aircraft itself that you have to be ready to evolve and improve and indigenise over larger time scales (just like it was done in ISRO)....but have the iterations of products all through it as well.

It is very tough in jet engines, there is phenomenal amount of things compacted into such small area having to work together and efficiently and optimally (compared to rocket engines). This is what I feel they did not account for.

M88 based engine was the way forward. IAF wants 114 more rafales that would mean production in india meaning if we use a jet engine with some similarities in other jets it could drive down production costs. I think now final production TEDBF and AMCA mark 1 will fly with Indian engines for which we will hold IPR hope the government properly funds this and see it through.

Organising Aero India 2021, 13th edition of the once-in-two-years exhibition that showcases India's Aerospace power and defence manufacturing capabilities along with participation of major Foreign OEMs, was a major challenge to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Indian Air Force because of the havoc wrought by the Coronavirus pandemic and resultant travel restrictions. In spite of the handicap however, the show, held in a mixed format of virtual and physical presence, went off smoothly. In this week's #SimplyNitin, Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, gives you the low down on what transpired at the show, from the show venue in Bengaluru.

Saurav Jha: Dr Reddy, it has observed that of late the developmental timelines for DRDO’s missile development projects has reduced considerably as compared to the past. What do you think has changed?

Satheesh Reddy: It’s simple really. This is what happens when you reach maturity in various areas related to missile projects from propulsion to sensors. We now have strong teams with the requisite pedigree and developing any kind of missile is not much of an issue for DRDO anymore. We have also been making changes on the administrative side of things and this is epitomized by the new Procurement Manual i.e. PM-2020. For instance, today online procurement of up to 20 lakhs for components or sub-systems has been authorized. Very importantly, we have now put in place a system where we can proceed for development with the second lowest qualified bidder (L2) for a project, in the event that the lowest bidder (L1) bows out for whatever reason/ is unable to execute without the need to initiate a new tender. L2 will of course have to match the L1 rate and terms & conditions.

Saurav Jha: Finally, what is the latest on the Ballistic Missile Development front i.e. Project AD?

Satheesh Reddy: Development of Phase-I of the BMD programme is complete.
