🇧🇩 Bangladesh Advances Towards Defence Industrial Self-Reliance

Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) is set to strengthen the nation’s defence manufacturing capability through the assembly and production of modern armoured vehicle platforms with Transfer of Technology (ToT) support from an unnamed friendly country.

The planned vehicle family includes APCs, IFVs, MRAPs, Armoured Ambulances, Recovery Vehicles, Reconnaissance & Surveillance (R&S) platforms and ATGM variants — supporting the operational needs of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and internal security agencies.

Beyond domestic requirements, the programme aims to position Bangladesh as an emerging defence manufacturer with future export potential across the Asia-Pacific market. 🇧🇩

Decisions about new commando unit, manpower, training in India & Russia and more.

Important discussions at the top army conference

Generals and formation commanders participated in the conference held at the Multipurpose Complex of Dhaka Cantonment on January 25 and 26. It was presided over by Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman.

The agenda of the conference was-

Formation of new special forces
Future manpower structure of the army
Permanentization of existing ad hoc units
Reconsideration of officer cadet training policy abroad
Major changes in training policy abroad

The conference decided that in the future officer cadets will be sent to India and Russia on a case-by-case basis, which will depend on-

Bilateral military relations
Financial conditions

The aim of this decision is to reduce military training dependence with India and Russia. Instead, attention is also being paid to increasing training cooperation with the UK, US, China and other countries. Defense analysts believe that this is one of the first major and clear strategic decisions of the Bangladesh Army after the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024.

According to defense sources, the decision could have an impact on military relations between Dhaka and New Delhi and Moscow. The Manpower Increase and Structural Reforms Conference also decided— Determining the future size of the total manpower of the Bangladesh Army, filling up new posts as per the proposal of the Planning Department in 2025, and making temporary units permanent.

Army Chief's Statement

Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman is expected to give a detailed statement on all these important and potentially controversial decisions. A day after the conference ends, he will visit the 66th Infantry Division in Rangpur. He will be accompanied by a lieutenant general and four brigadiers on the tour.

The Bangladesh Army's infantry units have started receiving the MICH (Modular Infantry Communication Helmet) helmets. These lighter and more compact versions of the PASGT helmets offer reliability in case of protection from handgun rounds, shrapnel & debris, and more space for the communication setup with other accessories.

Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Saturday inspected Alikadam Cantonment in Bandarban and inaugurated the newly built Army Hill and Jungle Warfare School.

The training facility has been established to enhance the Army’s operational capacity in conducting missions in remote hilly and forested areas, as well as in plains, according to a press release issued by ISPR.

It will enable personnel to undergo operational and technical training to acquire the necessary physical fitness, mental resilience and tactical skills required to effectively discharge their duties in hostile and hazardous environments.

For the first time in the history of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister & Defense Minister paid a sudden visit to the ongoing Summer Exercise of the Bangladesh Army. During the visit, he observed the raid operations, recon missions, and tactical-level preparations. He also tasted the food prepared by the Army personnel for the exercise. This kind of visit is highly necessary for a Defense Minister to understand the operational requirements for further improvement of the Armed Forces.

Prime Minister Tariq Rahman visits the ongoing Summer Exercise 2026 in Rahmatpur, Barisal. During his visit, he showed special interest in the locally made anti-drone system, made using the BD-08 assault rifle and the collimator sight. He also tested out the upgraded BD-08 with the thermal reflex sight, which we previously designated as the red dot sight mistakenly.

N.B. Bangladesh is going through a devastated flood right now. We urge the PM to visit the flood-affected areas as soon as possible.
