Bangladesh Advances Towards Defence Industrial Self-RelianceBangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) is set to strengthen the nation’s defence manufacturing capability through the assembly and production of modern armoured vehicle platforms with Transfer of Technology (ToT) support from an unnamed friendly country.
The planned vehicle family includes APCs, IFVs, MRAPs, Armoured Ambulances, Recovery Vehicles, Reconnaissance & Surveillance (R&S) platforms and ATGM variants — supporting the operational needs of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and internal security agencies.

The Manpower Increase and Structural Reforms Conference also decided— Determining the future size of the total manpower of the Bangladesh Army, filling up new posts as per the proposal of the Planning Department in 2025, and making temporary units permanent.

Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Saturday inspected Alikadam Cantonment in Bandarban and inaugurated the newly built Army Hill and Jungle Warfare School.
The training facility has been established to enhance the Army’s operational capacity in conducting missions in remote hilly and forested areas, as well as in plains, according to a press release issued by ISPR.
It will enable personnel to undergo operational and technical training to acquire the necessary physical fitness, mental resilience and tactical skills required to effectively discharge their duties in hostile and hazardous environments.

Bangladesh Army has formed a new battalion called ‘2nd Bangladesh Battalion’. A total of 4 companies have been formed under this new battalion. Which are named after the four Caliphs of Islam - Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Uthman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA).
A circular published on the Facebook page of the Bangladesh Army on June 18 informed about the inauguration of the new battalion. According to the notification, the army chief inaugurated ‘2nd Bangladesh Battalion’ in BMA. ‘1st Bangladesh Battalion’ as well as ‘2nd Bangladesh Battalion’ has been established with the aim of improving the professional skills, leadership qualifications and overall quality of training of officer cadets training in BMA to face the challenges of modern battlefield.
According to army sources, earlier ‘1st Bangladesh Battalion had a total of 5 companies (Jahangir Company, Rauf Company, Hamid Company, Noor Mohammad Company, Mostafa Company) which were named after the heroes of the 1971 Liberation War. Recently the 2nd Bangladesh Battalion was formed, where 4 companies were named after the four Caliphs of Islam. Going beyond that military tradition, this completely new nomenclature added a different dimension to the structural expansion of the army.
The source also said that two more companies have been proposed in the 2nd Bangladesh Battalion, which will be a full-fledged women's company of the Bangladesh Army. The two companies proposed in the name of Fatima (RA), daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and wife Ayesha (RA) have not yet been approved.
Sources said a new battalion is needed as the number of recruited cadets in the army increases every year.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made a surprise visit to the Bangladesh Army's summer exercise in Singair upazila of Manikganj this morning, where he observed military drills, interacted with soldiers and shared a meal with troops participating in the training.
According to a press release from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Tarique arrived at the summer training area of 8 Bir under the Bangladesh Army's 9 Infantry Division at around 9:20am and walked through a large section of the training ground.
He inspected different parts of the "firm base", where the general officer commanding of the division and the unit's commanding officer briefed him on the ongoing training activities and tactical preparations.
The prime minister later received an operational briefing before witnessing a raid exercise conducted by army personnel. He also observed various aspects of the field training, including battlefield positioning, tactical manoeuvres and the use of weapons.
During the visit, Tarique entered an army bunker and exchanged views with officers and soldiers on operational tactics. The PMO said the soldiers participating in the exercise expressed enthusiasm as the prime minister spent considerable time with them in the field.
He also ate freshly cooked food prepared for the participating soldiers and had tea with them.
Addressing the troops afterwards, Tarique said the people of Bangladesh have deep trust in the Bangladesh Army. Praising the force's role during national crises and in maintaining law and order, he stressed the importance of professional training, discipline and maintaining the highest level of operational preparedness. He also wished the army continued success.
Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brig Gen (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam, Chief of Army Staff Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman, Military Secretary Maj Gen Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, and other senior army officials accompanied him during the visit.
The PMO said it was the first time in the country's history that a prime minister had visited an army summer training area and spent an extended period with soldiers in the field.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday visited the Bangladesh Army's summer training exercise in Babuganj upazila of Barisal, where he observed field operations and the Army's wartime preparedness.
The prime minister arrived at the exercise site in East Rahmatpur at around 11:30am and toured the forest training area, watching operational drills and simulated battlefield exercises.
He observed troops taking up positions, maneuvering through dense forest terrain, and carrying out combat simulations designed to replicate wartime conditions. Army officers briefed him on various aspects of the exercise and the troops' operational readiness.
Rahman was also briefed on an anti-drone multi-barrel system used to detect and counter hostile drones, with army officers explaining its operating procedures and battlefield applications.
During the visit, the prime minister interacted with soldiers stationed in the forest, inquired about their well-being, and encouraged them to carry out their responsibilities with dedication and professionalism.
He also sat with the soldiers and listened to their experiences regarding training, responsibilities, and field operations.
Later, Rahman shared a meal prepared in a simulated battlefield environment for participating troops. The meal consisted of plain rice, lentils, mashed potato, prawn, and egg curry cooked over a fire lit inside a container.
Addressing the personnel, the prime minister said: "The people have deep confidence in the Bangladesh Army, which is a symbol of the country's independence and sovereignty. The Army has repeatedly set bright examples of professionalism, courage and patriotism in dealing with national crises, ensuring the country's security and maintaining law and order."
He added: "The discipline, skills, sacrifice and sense of duty of army personnel have earned the Bangladesh Army special respect among the people of the country."
Rahman stressed the importance of professional training, the use of modern technology, and maintaining the highest level of operational readiness to preserve that confidence and respect.
"I grew up in an army family. That is why I enjoy coming to army personnel, and it reminds me of my childhood. Talking to army personnel and spending time with them makes me feel as though I have returned to my childhood," he said.
Expressing hope that the Bangladesh Army would earn greater professional recognition internationally, the prime minister said the government would provide all necessary support to further strengthen the force's capability, modernization, and reputation.

The government has taken major steps to strengthen border security and strategic military capabilities in the southeastern part of the country. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved an infrastructure development project at a cost of Tk 1,311,530,000 to develop Ramu Cantonment in Cox's Bazar as a modern and complete military facility.
The project was approved in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairman Tariq Rahman at the NEC conference room of the Planning Commission in Sherbangla Nagar of the capital last Wednesday. In the second ECNEC meeting of the current financial year, 10 projects were approved at a total cost of Tk 9,333,580,000. Among them, this project of defense infrastructure development is of special importance.
At the end of the Eknek meeting, the Minister of State for Planning. Jonaid Abdur Rahim Saki said that currently there are not enough housing facilities for more than 8 thousand army personnel in Ramu cantonment. Apart from removing this deficit through the new project, the overall infrastructure of the cantonment will be modernized. The project will be implemented with full government funding.
According to the documents of the Planning Commission, the project initiated by the Ministry of Defense will be implemented by the Army Headquarters, Engineer in Chief Branch, Works Department and related military authorities. The implementation period of the project is from July 2026 to June 2030.
A large amount of residential and non-residential infrastructure will be constructed under the project. This includes about 1 lakh 35 thousand 883 square meters of residential buildings and 6 thousand 158 square meters of non-residential buildings.
Apart from this, there will be about 25 km of drainage structure, 11 tube wells, health care and water supply system, telecommunication equipment, construction of other necessary buildings and infrastructure and land development work for water drainage. The project also plans to procure computers and other equipment, electrical equipment, fire fighting equipment and furniture.
The issue of Ramu's hilly topography and environment has also gained importance in the implementation of the project. In the Eknek meeting, Prime Minister Tariq Rahman ordered the construction of buildings keeping the existing topography intact without cutting the mountains and leveling them. Instructions have also been given to design the building taking into account the normal height and topography of the land.
Due to its geographical location, Ramu is very important in the security system of Cox's Bazar and the southeastern region of the country. Apart from Cox's Bazar, Ramu is connected with a large area of Chittagong Hill Tracts. At the same time, it is close to the country's south-eastern border and important areas adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, so it is of special military strategic importance.
