BN also uses German engine on new ships designed/built by China.
ha . i didn't know that. i think Chinese have domestic engine but the german MTU diesel engines are top notch.
This might push BN to choose sub from S.Korea, Turkey or EU cause
German Type 209 or 214 (maybe too expensive + they wont sell it to us) ?
Chang Bogo Class (from korea)

i hope whatever we get comes with some form of AIP.

Korea or Turkey has best chance if it's not China. Well, i guess i already talked about this. Who knows why STM removed this from their catalog.

or worse we end up with scorpene which is already compromised.

More expensive than other options. (Royal Malaysian Navy's deal). Maybe BN can get the last batch of Sauro like it planned before. Saw a photo of our AFD delegation with Italian MOD. (Probably posted in foreign affairs thread). Or maybe we can follow Singapore's example and try to buy these if BN goes for second hand again. Specially Gotland class. (If these countries are willing to sell and if they have enough service life left by then)

Finally some progress!! CDDL signed a contract with IWM and Royal Haskoning for consultancy service to prepare draft DPP and feasibility study to upgrade CDDL by constructing second dry dock with associated shipbuilding infrastructure on 14th October, 2021. Senior defense secretary Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal also visited CDDL on 16th October, 2021. The dockyard has approximately 10 acres of empty lands for the construction of the second dry dock. I think we talked about this before. 2nd dry-dock isn't ready so frigate program will be delayed significantly. BN will start to build OPVs first. BNS Sher-E-Bangla is nearing completion which will have submarine berthing facility and we're using Type-35G for few years now. So BN might get new sub before frigates.

Will work be finished later this year ?

2028 but expect more delays. It might go beyond 2030.

Btw when do you think CDDL modernisation/upgrade will end ?

They didn't start the work of second dry dock so no point in asking that question. Don't know if the survey is complete or not and if it is, what's the result. Though I tried to find some news.

Why not considering floating docks? That could provide some flexibility.

You mean the procurement cost? $100 million per sub.
Damn that's very cheap. We bought 3 Bogo's for $1.1billion ($366M each) and that's very very cheap compared to offers from European vendors.

How much is the BN looking to spend for the next sub ?

One floating dock is in plan. BNS Mongla is getting a dry dock and BCG is getting a dry dock in Gazaria.

If we can't get Chinese sub with German engine then it's either Korean or Turkish sub. I expect BN to get the same deal like you for Jang Bogo. Looks like Korea is offering an improved version for PN with TAS.

So here are two things:

Bangladesh was able to buy BNS Bangabandhu thanks to the Saudi donation.

Bangladesh Navy was in talk to procure Chinese Romeo class submarine (Cough cough Ming Class equivalent) from China back in 1980s but it didn't happen simply because we were incapable of running them.
