SWS2 35mm SPAAG+SAM
In March 2019 China's military authorities high-lighted a new type of anti-aircraft weapon capable of countering cruise missiles and drones. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) issued a photo of drills conducted by the Chinese Army Artillery and Great Engineer Academy in Zhengzhou, Henan province on 26 March 2019. This antiaircraft gun with 35mm caliber is mounted on an 8x8 wheeled vehicle."The anti-aircraft artillery is already in a mature stage," said Weidongshu, a Chinese military expert. "I expect it to have already been deployed to the People's Liberation Army.... The most noteworthy thing about this anti-aircraft gun is the wheeled vehicle... "This means that it has more maneuverability than the previous anti-aircraft gun, and that it can operate anti-aircraft guns more safely in the field."
The 35mm guns will be able to shoot down drones and cruise missiles, "he said." It will be a powerful weapon for light targets as well as ground targets and ground defense facilities." The gun is likely equipped with an electro-optical aiming system that can send 35 millimetre shells to accurately intercept targets in the air, including drones and cruise missiles, Wei predicted.
It was deployed in a comprehensive exercise conducted by the PLA Army Academy of Artillery and Air Defence, which started on May 17 and is due to end on 31 May 2019, according to the PLA Daily report. Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst, told the Global Times on Monday that the appearance of the weapon in a PLA Daily report indicates the technology has now matured and the weapon might have already been commissioned into the Chinese military.
China’s 8X8 wheeled armored vehicle took part in a military drill held in Baotou in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on August 16, 2017. The 18-ton vehicle can be transformed into 40 different versions, including armored personnel carrier, command or reconnaissance vehicle, and as a boat when in water. It can even withstand attack by biochemical weapons, thanks to a coating of a special paint.
The SWS2 is a combination of a 35mm revolver cannon and a block of four surface-to-air missiles, mounted on a remote-controlled turret that sits atop an 8x8 VN1 armored platform. The 23-ton vehicle is reportedly constructed using fully-welded light armor, providing protection from small arms fire and shell splinters.
According to IHS Janes.com, the turret can rotate a full 360 degrees, with the 35mm cannon and the SAMs able to elevate from —2° to 85° and from —5° to 70°. The device will carry 400 rounds of high-explosive incendiary (HEI) 35 mm ammunition that can reach aircrafts flying at a distance of 4,000 meters and maximum altitude of 3,000 meters. The HEI ammunition, reportedly optimized for smaller targets such as drones, can also be fitted with tracer and semi-armor piercing capability.
The SAMs range is not yet specified. It is likely that the vehicle will carry only one load of SAMs, making it dependent on resupply. According to reports, the machine is currently available for export.
