in Shipbuilding News
13/08/2021

China’s new shipbuilding orders accounted for more than half of the global share in the first half of the year due to growing demand for container ships amid COVID-19, CCTV reported.

According to data released by China Association of the National Shipbuilding, China’s completed orders grew by 19 percent year-on-year in the first half, with rise in high-end ship orders.

China’s new ship orders accounted for 51 percent of the global share with the average monthly orders reaching 6.37 million dwt, 1.8 times that of shipbuilding completed in the same period.

Chen Jun, General Manager of Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co said they have entered peak season over June and July and delivered several large LNG ships and large container ships which are low-carbon and environmentally friendly.

“The green, environmental protection, low carbon design concept has not only made Chinese ships meet the most stringent emission requirements, but also gives Chinese ships strong market adaptability and market prospects,” he said.

At present, Guangzhou Shipyard International Company has eight container ship orders in hand, with the number of orders hitting a new high in the past decade, in particular new energy ships and large container ships which are urgently needed by the market, said Zhou Xuhui, deputy general manager of the company.

Lin Feng, deputy General Manager of China Shipbuilding Trading Co, said that due to the growing global demand for container ships, the company had received 53 orders for super large container ships with more than 15,000 containers, accounting for 57 percent of global orders.

Yangzijiang%20yard.jpg

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding reported total revenues of CNY4.47bn ($698m) for 3Q 2021, an increase of 25% year on year.
Katherine Si | Nov 02, 2021

To date, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has secured order for 124 vessels worth $7.41bn in 2021, and has an outstanding orderbook of $8.86bn for 165 vessels.

In the third quarter of this year 15 vessels were delivered, as compared to 9 vessels in 3Q 2020.

Despite the burgeoning orderbook it has not all been plain sailing for the Chinese ship

“Power crunch amidst shortage of coal supplies in China has led to electricity rationing and production halt at numerous factories in the months of September and October, but the impact on the group’s shipyards were kept under control. Since the beginning of November, restrictions and constraints on electricity usage have eased and the shipyards are now back to normal operations,” said the company.

Yangzijiang’s major shipyards are currently operating at full utilization and there are no changes to the group’s scheduled delivery of vessels in the second half of 2021.

What's the characteristics of these ships? Are they all container ships? And how on earth can China keep up with this demand, where do they get so much raw materials from?

But ships are mostly made of steel, you have to have a lot of steel to make a lot of ships.
I'm not trying to be pedantic but you're post says there're over 200% more demand. That means there has to be more raw material and production capacity to fulfill the pent-up demand. That 60% steel production rate is pre-pandemic I assume?

It's about the global demand, China mainly produces for the global market, and in order to meet the global demand, China imports a lot of raw material. 60% global steel production is the latest data, but China produces over half of the world total steel for at least a decade already, it's mainly for export.
