Bundeswehr selects Haenel MK 556 assault rifle to replace G36

by Nicholas Fiorenza

The Bundeswehr announced in a press release on 15 September that C G Haenel has been selected to supply its new assault rifle. Haenel is offering its MK 556 to replace the Bundeswehr’s G36 assault rifle from Heckler & Koch (H&K).

The Bundeswehr said the decision was not yet legally effective, leaving open the possibility of an appeal from H&K, which was competing with its HK416 and HK433 assault rifles. H&K CEO Jens Bodo Koch was quoted in a 15 September company press release as saying, “We will now examine the decision in detail from a legal perspective and exhaust all legal options.” H&K was “absolutely convinced of the quality of both the HK416 and the HK433. This quality has also been confirmed to us by the Bundeswehr in this tender.”

The necessary funding for the new assault rifle must be approved by the Bundestag, the German parliament, which the Bundeswehr expected by the end of the year.

They should sell the design of the HK433 to the Turkish army. Since they are not going to use it. What a shame I was looking forward to the HK433 being adopted.

Yes but everything else is still German.
the rifle itself belongs to the Caracal (UAE), the Haenel is all german:
The Caracal CAR 816 shares lineage to the Heckler & Koch HK416. The principal firearms engineers for the CAR 816 were Robert Hirt and Chris Sirois. Hirt was instrumental in the development of the HK416. Following his time with H&K, Hirt was recruited by SIG Sauer to work with then SIG engineer Chris Sirois on an improved version of the HK416: the SIG Sauer SIG516. Hirt and Siriois were then recruited by Caracal to develop a rifle that was superior to both the HK416 and SIG516. From this, the CAR 816 was created. [2]
It is blend of SIG516 & HK416
I also would like to see empoyee profile of Caracal.
Haenel has joined in EDGE group at 2008, Caracal in 2007.

Also the company develops firearms for UAE. Do you think that Emiratians have ability to develop them by themselves?
And they don't need to that,
They have money, they can recruit experts and scientist, you would be surprised to see the there are many western well-known professors are working in China as advisors, lab managers.
