A Chinese Z-10 attack helicopter has crashed in an area of Changsha in Hunan province just last week.

After images in social media of the damaged aircraft began to circulate on the internet, the Chinese Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Z-10K attack helicopter crashed during a “routine training mission” on March 19.

According to military sources, the Z-10 attack helicopter assigned to the army aviation brigade under the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force was on a routine training mission when it crashed on Friday.

Two pilots of the helicopter were pronounced dead.

The Z-10 is a modern Chinese attack helicopter developed by Changhe Aircraft Industries Group (CHAIG) and the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute (CHRDI) for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The Z-10 attack helicopter can be primarily deployed in anti-armour and battlefield interdiction missions. The helicopter can also conduct limited air-to-air combat operations. It incorporates a conventional attack helicopter layout featuring a nail down fuselage and stepped tandem cockpits.

Chinese state-run media CGTN reported that the Z-10 attack helicopters are seldom crashing due to poor instruments performance and engine failures. China has one of the world’s most restrictive media environments, relying on censorship to control information in the news, online, and on social media.

Previously, CGTN called the Chinese J-15 a “flopping fish” for its repetitive crashes and engine failures. Chinese media often discloses information due to the frustration of its military experts and the quality of Chinese military equipment China manufactures. The recent crash landing of a Chinese Z-10 attack helicopter led to the complete destruction of the helicopter.

Another Chinese army attack helicopter crashed on 4 March 2013, hospitalizing both its crew members but without causing fatalities. A series of Z-10 attack helicopters crashed in 2005, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 reports CGTN.

China’s addiction to reverse engineering and take short cut to develop aircraft and helicopters led to the development of poor quality equipment. It’s not about the look and exterior of the aircraft and helicopter what is most important, — the electronics, radar, instrumentation and reliable engines, Chinese radar expert Liu Yongtan, and defense engineer Qian Qihu told CGTN.

Despite the fact that the Z-10 is intended to conduct tough battles against ground, sea and air targets, it turned out that the developers simply did not foresee its strength capabilities – when making a crash landing, the helicopter collapsed like a cardboard box.

In the presented photo, the combat rotorcraft literally fell apart, although the landing indicators were exceeded only slightly. It is known that both pilots onboard the attack helicopter were killed – the helicopter was completely unsuitable for high mountainous terrain and therefore could not protect even the pilots, not to mention its integrity of the structure.

Experts note that due to such a miscalculation by the Chinese Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation , such helicopters may turn out to be completely unsuitable for warfare, which will force the PRC either to carry out a deep modernization of this rotary-wing aircarft, or to abandon the operation of the latter.

The CAIC Z-10 attack helicopter equips only the PLAAF. First flown in 2003, it entered service seven years later, with an estimated 300 examples built to date. The Z-10 attack helicopter primarily engages in anti-tank missions but is also capable of air-to-air engagements. Armament includes ADK10 and HJ-8 anti-tank missiles, TY-90 air-to-air missiles and a 30mm nose-mounted cannon.

China wants to sale the helicopter to Pakistan, but the high altitude trial failed consecutively,– Pakistan placed an order of 36 T-129 attack helicopters from Turkey.

One of the main reasons, China bought Mi-171sh helicopters from Russia that Z-10 failed multiple high altitude trials in Galwan Valley and Dokhlam area.
