Chinese e-vehicle battery enables 1,000-km journey on single charge

Xinhua, June 24, 2022

FUZHOU, June 23 (Xinhua) -- China's leading automotive lithium-ion battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), revealed on Thursday a new battery that provides electric vehicles with a driving range of over 1,000 km on a single charge.

With the third generation of cell-to-pack (CTP) technology, the battery named Qilin, or CTP 3.0 battery, has a volume utilization efficiency of 72 percent and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg for ternary battery systems, giving it the highest integration level in the world, according to CATL. The battery is named after a legendary creature named "Qilin" in Chinese mythology.

By directly integrating cells into packs without modules, CTP technology improves system energy density, simplifies manufacturing and helps reduce costs. Besides, the CTP 3.0 battery features improvements in service life, safety, charging speeds and low-temperature performance.

The product's full-life-cycle reliability and resistance to shock and vibration are improved by the integrated energy unit, which is composed of the cell and a multifunctional elastic interlayer.
The battery boasts thermal stability and safety, and is therefore compatible with materials of higher energy density in product upgrades. In extreme circumstances, the cell can be cooled rapidly, thus preventing abnormal thermal conduction between cells. Meanwhile, charging takes just 10 minutes in fast mode.

Qilin batteries are expected to go into mass production and arrive on the market in 2023, said CATL.

China's CATL to produce next-generation EV battery in 2023

SHANGHAI, June 23 (Reuters) - Chinese battery giant CATL (300750.SZ) will start mass production next year of its latest generation product, with greater efficiency that lets electric cars drive longer distances on each charge, the company said on Thursday.

The world's biggest battery maker is scrambling to retain its top position against competition from rivals such as BYD (002594.SZ), which will soon start supplying batteries to Tesla.

CATL's new battery, called Qilin, will boost volume utilisation rate to 72%, the world's highest, versus 50% for its first generation launched in 2019, the firm said, and increase the battery system's energy density to 255 Wh/kg.

But the firm did not say if any electric vehicle maker had placed orders for the new battery.

CATL, which supplies batteries supplier to automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW and Nio suffered a fall of 24% in first-quarter net profit, hit by soaring metal costs.

In May, the company said it expected a better profit margin in the second quarter, after raising prices and passing on costs to automaking clients.

CATL sold the equivalent of 41.5 GWh of batteries in the first four months, more than double the sales of second-placed LG Energy Solution (373220.KS), Seoul-based SNE Research says.

As it ramps up overseas expansion, CATL is in the final stages of vetting sites in the United States to build electric vehicle batteries, Reuters has reported.

The firm, based in the city of Ningde in the southern province of Fujian, has said it would start supplying cylindrical cells to BMW from 2025 for a new series of electric vehicles.

Tesla (TSLA.O) is also ramping up output of its "4680" batteries that hold about five times the energy of the existing 2170 cells.

A record-breaking electric vehicle (EV) battery, with an unprecedented volume utilization efficiency of 72 percent, an energy density of up to 255 watt hour/kilogram (Wh/kg), the world's highest integration level, and capable of delivering a range of over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, was revealed by a Chinese company on Thursday.

The battery, named Qilin after a legendary creature in Chinese mythology, is expected to go into mass production in 2023, said Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), China's leading automotive lithium-ion battery maker.

In 2019, CATL launched the world's first module-less battery pack cell-to-pack (CTP), taking the lead in achieving a volume utilization efficiency of over 50 percent.

The Qilin battery, or CTP 3.0 battery, with the third generation CTP technology, has a volume utilization efficiency of 72 percent and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg for ternary battery systems, giving it the highest integration level in the world, according to CATL.

The battery delivers 13 percent more power than the 4680 battery produced by global EV giant Tesla, with CATL saying it offers improvements in range, fast-charging, safety, service life, efficiency and low-temperature performance.

The CTP technology, which directly integrates cells into packs without modules to improve system energy density, simplify manufacturing and help reduce costs, features the CTP 3.0 battery with improvements in service life, safety, charging speeds and low-temperature performance.

The integrated energy unit, composed of the cell and the multifunctional elastic interlayer, builds a more stable load-bearing structure perpendicular to the driving direction to enhance the shock and vibration resistance of the battery pack.

The Qilin battery, with the world's first large-surface cell cooling technology placing liquid cooling functional parts between adjacent cells and expanding the heat exchange area fourfold, can support a hot start in 5 minutes and fast charging in 10 minutes.

According to CATL, in extreme cases, the battery can enable the cell to cool down rapidly, effectively preventing abnormal thermal conduction among cells. Moreover, it has also achieved thermal stability and safety for all chemical systems, making it compatible with materials with higher energy density.

I heard by 2030's, every car sold in China must be EVs, conventional gas cars will be totally banned.
