"Just a nice picture..."

The 'Jumbolino' on the photo has been manufactured in 1989 but converted to 'QT' (Quiet Trader) six months later. It was sold by WDL (D-AWDL ntu) to Pionair in Australia but its delivery flight was posponed several times due to COVID-19.

Anton van Ruiten was able to take this photo at Cologne on 28 October 2020 and he informed us that the delivery of VH-SQR (msn E3151) is scheduled for this week. Its proposed route should be: Cologne/Bonn – Izmir – Hurghada – Muscat – Mumbai – Colombo – Medan - Ngurah Rai – Darwin - Alice Springs – Sydney/Bansktown.

Former US Army Friendship touches down at Lelystad!

Foundation for Flying Dutch Cultural Heritage's (Stichting Vliegend Nederlands Cultureel Erfgoed, VNCE) former US Army Fokker C-31A Troopship (still in Golden Knights colours, the US Army's parachute team), registered as N27FF (msn 10668) arrived on 3 November 2020 at Dutch soil.

Using callsign N27FF and Mode S indicated GKA608, the C-31A arrrived at 15:58 hours local time at Lelystad airport and received a welcome shower from the fire brigade. It then taxied to the Zeusch hangar, next to the Satys hangar, and was pushed inside.

VNCE not only wants to preserve this important piece of Dutch aviation heritage for future generations, but will also provide the interested public an opportunity to fly as a passenger on a Fokker F27, which is otherwise practically impossible nowadays.

The US Army had two C-31A Troopships in their inventory. Both aircraft were operated by the USAPT Aviation Section (US Army Parachute Team). The aircraft were delivered to the US Army in November 1985 and withdrawn from use in 2019. They were replaced by two DHC-8 aircraft, known in the military as C-147A.

The first C-31A, serial 85-01607 (msn 10652) is preserved at the Pima Air Museum, Tucson (AZ). The second one, 85-01608, has been sold to the Stichting Vliegend Nederlands Cultureel Erfgoed (VNCE).

Irkut rolls out first MC-21 with Russian PD-14 engines​

Russian airframer Irkut has rolled out the first MC-21 equipped with domestically-built Aviadvigatel PD-14 powerplants.

The variant, designated the MC-21-310, is the alternative to the -300 which features Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engines.

Irkut has yet to fix a date for the maiden flight of the -310 but says it has “completed construction” of the initial aircraft.

Ground tests beckon for the initial MC-21-310


It formally transferred the twinjet from the assembly line to the flight-test division of the aviation plant at Irkutsk.

Irkut says the aircraft will undergo ground manoeuvring and engine tests in preparation for its first flight.

“The upcoming tests of the MC-21 with domestic engines are a landmark event for the industry,” says state technology firm Rostec’s industrial aviation director, Anatoly Serdyukov.

Volga-Dnepr Airlines An-124-100 suffers runway excursion following uncontained engine failure​

On 13 November at about 12:08 (local time), a Volga-Dnepr Airlines An-124-100 (registered RA-82042) departed Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport, Russia towards Vienna, Austria on flight VI4066.

Just after take-off, the aircraft sustained an uncontained engine number 2 failure. The pilots decided to return to Novosibirsk to make an emergency landing. While landing, the aircraft rolled out of the runway. Two minutes after initial take-off.

There were 14 crew members on board.

The Novosibirsk Investigation Department of the West Siberian SUT of the Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a pre-investigation check under Part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of traffic safety rules and the operation of air transport).

The investigation team is currently inspecting the scene, including the aircraft and other verification activities aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident.

Based on the results of the pre-investigation check, a procedural decision will be made.

MNG Airlines to add 1 A330-300P2F, cancels orders for 3 A330-200Fs

In Airbus' latest December update, it became clear that MNG Airlines has decided to scrap its order for three A330-200Fs. With these cancelled orders, Airbus now has no A330-200Fs on its backlog left.

However, as MNG Airlines still has a need for additional capacity, the airline has, according to CH-Aviation, decided to add an A330-300P2F to its fleet. The aircraft is former China Southern Airlines B-6086 (879), which is currently registered VQ-BSO and owned by DAE Capital. It's now at Singapore-Changi to be converted into freighter and delivery is expected by August of this year.

MNG Airlines was founded in 1996 and launched flights in 1997. It currently has a fleet of seven A300-600(F)s and one A330-200F. The company also owns Solinair from Slovenia, which also operates two A300-600(F)s.

ALL NIPPON HELICOPTER’S H160 COMPLETES FIRST FLIGHT​

All Nippon Helicopter’s (ANH) H160 has performed its first flight test, a 95-minute flight at the Marseille Provence Airport. This successful maiden flight paves the way for the aircraft’s entry into service in Japan.

ANH deploys a helicopter fleet comprising six AS365s and five H135s for electronic news gathering for the TV stations across Japan. This H160 will replace one of its AS365s.
“We are delighted to see the successful inaugural flight of Japan’s very first H160, and we are looking forward to this next-generation helicopter playing an important role in our nationwide missions,” said Jun Yanagawa, President of ANH. “Since the introduction of the AS365 helicopter three decades ago, the requirements of the electronic news gathering market is constantly evolving and has significantly improved. This state-of-the-art helicopter H160 is a timely welcome for our operations.”

The H160 was granted its type certificate by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in July 2020, with the certification from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) expected in early 2021. Upon delivery of the helicopter, specialised equipment installation and customisation will be performed at Airbus Helicopters’ Kobe facility, before its entry into service.
“We are honoured to have ANH as our H160 launch customer in Japan, as they renew their fleet. This successful first flight is particularly meaningful during this unprecedented time for the industry. We thank our customer and the teams involved for devoting maximum efforts into this achievement. We will continue to provide our utmost support and ensure a smooth delivery to ANH,” said Guillaume Leprince, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan.

Japan’s electronic news gathering market is a mature market with 87 helicopters dedicated for such missions today. Close to 70% of these helicopters are manufactured by Airbus, with the H125, AS365, H135 and H155 platforms commonly used by the operators. With the imminent introduction of the H160, which is equipped with additional safety features from the Helionix’s accrued pilot assistance, this helicopter will bring added leverage to the operator.

Russian PD-14 Engine for MC-21 Airliner passes ICAO Emission Certification Test​

The PD-14 engine designed to power Russia’s MC-21 airliner has cleared emission tests conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The corresponding addition to the PD-14 type certificate was received by UEC-Aviadvigatel, United Engine Corporation (UEC) said in a statement.

PD-14 was first certified by the Federal Air Transport Agency in 2018 and at that time complied with ICAO standards. In January 2020, a new international standard came into force, in which the smoke and emission standards of non-volatile particles were changed - this required additional certification, UEC said.

"MC-21-310 aircraft with PD-14 engines will be able to perform international flights. The second important point is that Russia will now be able to supply aircraft with engines manufactured by the UEC to the international market," said UEC Deputy Director General Yury Shmotin.

The MC-21 jetliner fitted with PD-14 turbofan engine has been re-designated as MC-21-310 while the earlier designation was MC-21-300 which flew with the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engine. The engine has a takeoff thrust from 9 to 18 tons.
PD-14 engine was developed after the earlier PW1400G Engine was denied to it under U.S. sanctions imposed in 2017 against Russian Aerospace entities.

The MC-21 aircraft made its first flight with this domestically-made engine in December 2020.
Serial deliveries of the aircraft fitted with UEC engine is expected to take place at the end of 2021.
