Clashes with China: Indian warships were deployed at forward positions, says Navy Chief Admiral Kumar asserted that the Indian Navy is fully confident of defending India's maritime interests

Indian warships were deployed at forward positions during the border clashes with China at the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh, said Indian Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Friday, pointing out that the security situation at the northern borders has added to the challenges India faces.

Admiral Kumar asserted that the Indian Navy is fully confident of defending India's maritime interests and is carrying out the acquisition of platforms considering the possible security challenges before the country.

He said that the Indian Navy has been keeping an eye on the presence of China's People's Liberation Army (Navy) in the Indian Ocean since 2007.

Sharing details of the Chinese warships' presence in the Indian Ocean Region, Admiral Kumar said that on an average there are seven Chinese PLA Navy ships. They also send their submarines sometimes.

"We are aware about their (Chinese) ships deployment. We also plan our strategy keeping everything in mind," said Admiral Kumar adding, "We have kept Chinese ships under close surveillance, and we continue to do that even now."

He was addressing the media ahead of the Indian Navy Day on December 4.

Speaking about the Chinese Navy's strength, the Admiral said they have constructed 180 ships in the last 10 years.

Talking about the Indian Navy's strength, he said the Indian Navy has evolved from 33 ships to "where we are today. We develop our capability based on our maritime interests not what others are doing."

He added that a total of 39 warships and submarines are being constructed and 37 of them are being built in Indian shipyards.

Detailing about the ships' induction into the fleet, he said in the last seven years 28 ships were commissioned.

Talking about unmanned systems, Admiral Kumar said: "We have a ten-year road map with a plan to have indigenous unmanned airborne, underwater and autonomous systems."

He appreciated the government's decision to create a Department of Military Affairs, saying, "The creation of the Department of Military Affairs is the biggest reform in the military since independence along with the creation of the post of CDS. This enables faster decision-making and fewer layers of bureaucracy."

India and China are engaged in border disputes for the last 19 months.

India's biggest naval assets around India are the Andaman/Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian sea - pretty much unsinkable carriers. Also, out of India's armed forces, it is the Navy which is the most formidable. In the Todd & Lindberg classification system, India is Asia's only Blue Water Navy.

China doesn't have any safe sea lanes out of potential foe am I correct ?
Except for South Korea and Japan, the other countries having conflicts in South China sea don't possess formidable navies to counter PLAN's overwhelming numbers or block shipping routes...their AFs will have to play a crucial role during times of war

any war planners should skip ASEAN involvements in any of the war prep. They're near useless.

If any war breaks out in the Pacific, it would likely be over Taiwan. Chinese buildup WILL be noticed. For the US and its allies this means their ships will start to leave port, jets doing CAP, others assets dispersed, submarine start patrols etc. Simply put China's vulnerable sea lanes will be in peril as the allies would go after those sea lanes and start blockading China in return if China blockades Taiwan.

any waterway stretching from the Arabian sea, Malacca strait, Sunda strait, Lombok strait will be potentially inhabited by US or its allied naval and air assets.

That's what I meant in my post #3

Out of China's armed forces, Navy is the weakest link, we still have a lot of catch up to do in the coming years.

Air force, China has two types of 5 Gen fighter jets, relatively more advanced than the navy. In term of propaganda, China is no match for the west and your media.

@beijingwalker - I am happy to have a conversation here. Don't quote my post from DH and post on PDF.

Also, that India is a blue water navy is not my personal opinion. It's based on an international classification system and this itself is clearly mentioned in my post.

wikipedia is never known as a reliable source.
Maybe not in China.

And Wikipedia itself is not a source. It clearly gives the book ISBN number and page number where this data can be accessed. If the book is not banned in China, feel free to access it.

I don't really care, if you believe Indian navy is a blue water navy while Chinese navy is not, whatever sources you quote are fine. Chinese navy is not up to par yet anyway, it needs another decade.

The only blue water navy on Earth is the US Navy, Royal Navy and The French Navy.

The likes of China, Russia, India actually fells in the green water navy as they could not sustain operations globally.
