HÜRKUŞ- New Generation Basic Trainer Aircraft

New Generation Basic Trainer (HÜRKUŞ) Development Program contract was signed between the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries and Turkish Aerospace in March 2006. HÜRKUŞ with day and night mission capability; will be able to realize instrument flight, navigation and formation training phases.

Within the framework of the program; two aircraft configurations are being developed.

  • HÜRKUŞ-A: Basic version which is to be certified with EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) according to CS-23 requirements.
  • HÜRKUŞ-B: Advanced version with integrated avionics (including HUD, MFDs, and Mission Computer). Following the completion of taxi tests, the first aircraft of HÜRKUŞ-A Configuration successfully performed its first flight on August 29, 2013 at Turkish Aerospace's facilities. Consequent to the flight permission of SHGM (Turkish Civil Aviation General Directorate) and EASA the first flight, which lasted 33 minutes, was performed with open landing gear position at a height of 9500 ft. During the flight, the first checks were performed on control surfaces and a successful landing was realized.
The second aircraft has performed its first flight on September 10, 2014.

HÜRKUŞ, tandem two-seat, low-wing, single-engine, turboprop aircraft, is designed to ensure superior performance as a new generation advanced trainer aircraft and light attack & armed reconnaissance combat aircraft, in order to fulfil the complete training gap between elementary training and fighter aircraft conversion, as well as satisfying close air support roles in most demanding operational theatres.

I came across this video published by TAI in the 4th of July and when I watched it makes no mention of hurkus
I wonder if hurkus was scrapped or it was unintentionally not mentioned

If only we were building the engine ourselves :) We could supply so many of these to needy countries :)

I don't get why Hurkus didn't started production. Maybe they are looking for foreign order(s) to start production as there is enough modern trainer aircraft like KT-1s and F35 acquisition stopped. PT6 engine Hurkus uses wouldn't be an issue even when exporting.

Very nice video. Seems we've made all necessary preparations and deals for making this project move forward.

TAI - İTÜ - ODTÜ joint project: "Very-Light Aircraft"(VLA)

This has been a roller coaster ride. Two private companies bought very light aircraft brands as they went bankrupt, never to be heard again. Türk Hava Kurumu (THK) was working with Türkkuşu T-19A project, nothing happened. Uzaytem was working on a VLA aircraft, they stopped as they didn't get funding. It's good to see one project finally getting funding.

Civil Aviation is underdeveloped in this country, its an big issue. THK had been rendered useless. THK should be the one working on this project not TAI.

Too little too late. The aviation world is abandoning classical planes and the leading schools of Turkey are just taking them up. For once make something innovative.

This is a very good project for students to get experience, main goal of this project is this. They get to design the aircraft and build it from ground up. This is completely different area, I don't get your too late and classical aircraft comment. This is not a military aircraft.

The world is moving towards eVTOLs. This project will not do any good other then teaching students how to build useless planes. They should have started something that is innovative and will be up to date going forward. Another project being made for the sake of having done. They should try to build one of the Teknofest helicopter challenge entries for example. Or one of the flying car entries. Both of these schools have entries in the challenge. Or build some other innovative plane.

Innonative ideas are good. The problem is how practical will it be??

Also costs, maintence you name it especially a new design.
That question does not stop innovators around the world from trying to bring new ideas to life. Some of those ideas will definitely change this world forever and make their country richer. Leaving the old school in the dust.

I have to give you that though many of the innovations that innovators propose are not realistic and will not get anywhere but some are very sound propositions yet they get overlooked. They are being treated like they are a dime a dozen because the whole nation is mobilized with Teknofest (in Turkey) to come up with ideas and the good are being treated like the bad should be.
