I remember an event in Istanbul where the chief engineer of the Hürkuş-I project was a speaker of, we chatted a few minutes after the event. He said that they developed a new airfoil for the Hürkuş. A few years later I mentioned this to a İTÜ aviation professor that I met for a project proposal and he didn't even believe they did that. A few years later in an aviation investor meeting I mentioned how the instructor pilots position is elevetad in Hürkuş and it was impressing to the investor at the meeting. And the Hürkuş development has come to a close today. It is like a journey of me following the Hürkuş development. Like the birth of a flyer that will be part of the aviation history in time.

Türkiye has issued its first Military Type Certificate for a domestically developed air platform following a comprehensive certification process conducted in line with international standards and relying entirely on national expertise.

The certificate was awarded to HÜRKUŞ-II on Sept. 9 by a Certification Board comprising personnel from the Secretariat of Defense Industries (SSB) and the Turkish Air Force, according to an SSB statement.

SSB head Haluk Görgün described the certification as both a technical and strategic milestone, saying it demonstrated Türkiye’s ability to design, produce, test, verify and certify its own aircraft.

He added that the experience gained through HÜRKUŞ-II would provide lasting institutional expertise for the certification of future national air platforms.

The certification process covered 12 disciplines, including avionics, electrical systems, propulsion and fuel, human factors, cabin safety, system safety, aircraft systems, flight performance, structures and software. A total of 1,790 certification requirements were verified, while 950 supporting documents were technically reviewed.

The aircraft also underwent 153 certification tests, comprising 38 laboratory tests, 71 ground tests and 44 flight tests.

The work brought together specialists from the SSB, the Turkish Air Force, the Defense Ministry, TR Airworthiness Services and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), the aircraft’s manufacturer. Their combined expertise covered the process from design and production to testing, verification and technical assessment.

Great news, finally! Altay of the skies, lots of tears both due to happiness and sadness on this program.

Pundits had raised the bar again saying a "fleet of aircraft" was ready for a huge ceremony, but we only got two. This is of course not the first time we were let down by Hürkuş and the announced numbers are again a downgrade what we heard from TAI GM in January 2026 where he said they planned to deliver 22 aircraft in 2026. We received 2 instead, and hopefully will get 8 more this year.

Going back 2 years:
First in April 2025, official TAI gazette said 15 aircraft would be delivered in 2025 with remaining 40 by 2028.

By September 2025, we were told by TAI GM that 10 would be delivered in 2025 and 15 each in 2026, 2027 and 2028.

By October we were told 3 would be delivered by end of 2025.

Come January 2026, there were no deliveries. First real news came in May 2026, where pundits were told that the first batch would be delivered in 3 months. Now in Q4 2026, first 2 aircraft are delivered.

Per latest of what we heard with the delivery of the two aircraft, plan is still to deliver all 55 aircraft by 2028. That of course remains to be seen. We don't have an explanation on the delays, reason of the delays, what was done to mitigate those delays.

Per official TAI gazzette, TAI will deliver 15 Hürkuş IIs to HvKK this year, with remaining 40 to be delivered by 2027.

Pretty tight schedule of about 15-20 aircraft per year, hope they also get some export contracts, would be a loss to lose that production pipeline.

Well that didn't take long.

"Demiroğlu stated that the production of 15 aircraft is currently in full swing at TUSAŞ, adding, "The goal is to continue delivering 10 aircraft by the end of the year. We will deliver 15 in 2026, 15 in 2027, and the rest in 2028."

Congratulates to TAI who delivered the first new modern Turkish made manned aircraft to the picky customer the Turkish Air Force. A stellar performance from nothing under their belt to a certified high performing aircraft when in reality there is no pressure to deliver as there is already an aircraft serving the purpose. TAI are developing more than a dozen aircraft simultaneously and they have already brought the developments to final stages. With the delivery of the first one the remaining developments are to be delivered one after another in the next couple of years. A great time to be alive watching all these developments being fulfilled one after another in record speed.
