The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has taken delivery of the Gotland-class submarine HMS Uppland following a refit in Karlskrona.

The submarine delivery by Saab comes after a ‘Mid-life upgrade’ to the ship, which had been conducted to ensure its operational availability.

Saab said that the upgrade includes new sensors and navigation systems, giving enhanced capabilities to the vessel.

HMS Uppland is the second submarine in the class to undergo major changes and become operational again.

Saab business area Kockums head Lars Tossman said: “The Gotland-class submarines have an international reputation that many other submarines would wish for, with a stealthy ability and endurance beyond the ordinary.

“Sweden’s ability to develop world-class submarines is a result of the close cooperation between industry, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and the Swedish Royal Navy. We at Saab are proud that the latest cutting-edge underwater technology is now operational on-board both HMS Uppland and HMS Gotland.”

HMS Uppland had been equipped with 50 new systems. Of these, 20 are new systems used in the next-generation Blekinge-class submarines.

All Gotland-class submarines underwent minor modifications during the initial part of their lifetime.
