RFHIC to export US$2.2 mln worth of defense goods to Italy's Leonardo: DAPA

SEOUL, May 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korean defense firm RFHIC will export about US$2.2 million worth of defense components to Italian defense giant Leonardo in line with the signing of an "offset program" agreement, the state arms procurement agency said Wednesday.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and Leonardo signed the agreement earlier in the day over South Korea's offset program, which sets certain conditions for foreign companies to meet when they engage in key defense projects.

Under the program, foreign contractors involved in defense deals worth over $10 million must meet conditions, such as technology transfers or the purchase of Korean-made components.

Under the latest agreement, the value of Leonardo's purchases from RFHIC, which specializes in high-tech components, can be recognized for the Italian company's offset requirements in future projects.

DAPA said RFHIC will export about $2.2 million worth of high-power amplifier components to the company thanks to the latest agreement. It did not offer further details of the export deal.

DAPA said it would continue to push for such offset program agreements to support small and medium-sized defense companies.

Wavice is announced on the 8th that it has signed an export contract with an Indian defense company for high-power radio frequency (RF) amplifier modules for anti-drone jammers.

The modules ordered are key components used in jammers that disable drones by interfering with their radio signals. They are equipped with Wavice's gallium nitride (GaN) RF semiconductor chips. The anti-drone jammers will ultimately be delivered to the Indian Ministry of Defense and installed in the border region between India and Pakistan.

The customer and order size have not been disclosed. Wavice introduced itself as a company that supplies satellite navigation system (GNSS) technology to the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), playing a key role in defense and space projects.

I am still not sure whether South Korea will be able to sell weapons to Vietnam. Although Vietnam has established good relations with the West, to the extent that it purchases American weapons, it still has ties with North Korea. Therefore, there is still controversy in South Korea. However, judging from the recent K-AIC and related news reports, it seems that this contract will go ahead.

“When conducting due diligence for the acquisition of the Philly Shipyard, it was difficult to even see the Goliath crane move once a day, but now we set the Goliath's schedule on a minute-by-minute basis.” (Lee Jong-moo, Head of Hanwha Philly Shipyard)

Hanwha has finally revealed the interior facilities of Philly Shipyard, which it acquired in the US.

The once-glorious Philly Shipyard is now striving to improve its efficiency through the capabilities that Hanwha Ocean has built up over the years. This includes improving the shipyard's facilities and applying automation technology. But will it be able to deliver warships to the US government? The reporter points out that to achieve results, the shipyard must overcome various challenges, including U.S. tariff barriers, the Byrnes-Tollefson Amendment, and securing a skilled workforce.

Still, the interviews with the shipyard workers seem quite positive. Whatever the case may be, people come first.

“What do you think of this training center? What are your expectations for the future?”
Welding apprentice Se-rim (36, from Tunisia, married to an American) / "The most interesting thing about the future is that when you walk around the huge shipyard, you can see that everything is expanding. Every day, I hear news about what people are doing or what they tried yesterday. So, I can feel that the future is bright for the people who work here, compared to other companies where there is no progress. It used to be just about going to work, but now they say, ‘Good deals are being made. We're working hard.’ And you can see the changes in reality. The company is changing its rules and trying new things. So when I go to work, I feel like I'm part of something good, something that's expanding and growing. That gives me energy. It's what gets me up at 4 a.m. every morning to go to work."

Didn't realize this was such an issue. Indonesia still has ties to North Korea, having embassies and probably one of the more neutral to decent relations with the hermit kingdom. Yet Indonesia purchases a decent amount from the South Korean defense industry. I'm curious if this is South Korean public sentiment or differences I'm not aware of between Indonesia vs Vietnam's relations with North Korea.
