French Gendarmerie to get new armored vehicles

The French Gendarmerie will (at last) get new armored vehicles to replace its ageing fleet of 80 VBRG (entered service in 1972!) after years of delay due to "lack of budget". The measure has been presented in the budget 2021. The Gendarmerie needs 89 vehicles to replace its VBRGs to carry out their law enforcement missions.

The French Gendarmerie has two types of armored vehicles ;

The VBRG,which it uses for law enforcement missions on the French mainland.

And the VAB it uses for France and overseas deployments,notably used in Afghanistan.

The two candidates are the Sherpa from Arquus (notably used by the GIGN)

The Serval from Nexter in its law enforcement version. A vehicle that was chosen in its military version by the French army to replace with the Griffon its entire VAB fleet. 2,038 vehicles are planned to be acquired,the Gendarmerie could probably benefit from economy of scale.
