Former Foreign Secretary. Touhid Hossain said that Bangladesh should take initiative to establish strategic relations with Germany. Because over-reliance on China for arms is not good for Bangladesh. Bangladesh can focus on procuring arms from Germany by emphasizing the strategic context. There is an opportunity to establish new cooperation between the two countries in this regard.

He made the remarks in a keynote address at a hotel in the capital on Monday to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-Germany relations.

The event was jointly organized by the German research institute Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and the Center for Governance Studies (CGS).

German Ambassador Akhim Toster said the country has made great strides because of politicians. Bangladesh has been able to make this improvement in the last 50 years because they have implemented the right policy. Politicians need to look ahead so that Bangladesh can reach the top.

He said that Bangladesh was one of the 10 countries that had decided to establish cooperation with Bangladesh in tackling the risk of climate change as it wanted to build closer ties with Bangladesh.

Referring to Germany and the European Union as the biggest destinations for Bangladeshi products, Touhid Hossain said in his article that in the future, if it is upgraded from a least developed country to a developing country, the preferential trade facility (GSP) will not be available. In the future, it is important to improve on issues such as good governance and freedom of expression in the interests of trade.

Referring to China's role in resolving the Rohingya crisis, Touhid Hossain said Myanmar had allowed China to enter the Bay of Bengal through its territory. As a result, construction of two energy pipelines from there to China is in progress. Myanmar also procures military equipment from China. Therefore, Bangladesh should look for alternatives on arms. The alternative could be Germany.

Fayaz Murshid Kazi, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Western Europe Atomic Energy Division), told the panel that "before Brexit, the United Kingdom was given priority in its relations with the EU. But after Brexit, it moved to Germany. Our bilateral relations with Germany and the European Union will deepen in the days to come. "

Former Commerce Minister and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Lt. Colonel (retd) Muhammad Farooq Khan said, "Diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Germany have always been of special importance to us."
