On the way the first 44 M1117 ASV Guardian, in a few hours will be in the hands of the Greek Army.
The 44 M1117 ASV Guardian were US military vehicles stationed in US camps in Germany. They have never seen a battle, which makes them "new".
Due to some delays regarding the receipt of the armored vehicles, Greece lost valuable used material (wireless transceivers, weapons, etc.) that could be included with their receipt. The main weapon of the vehicles is the grenade launcher Mk19, as well as two machine guns, a 12.7 mm M.2HB, and a 7.62 mm FN MAG. If Greece had moved earlier, the weapons would have been left in the vehicles. However, they were removed because, according to the strict laws of the USA, it is not possible to leave weapons left in "yards" of used material. We do not know how many vehicles their free weapons were released from, but it is certainly a number that costs the Greek Armed Forces. There were many who said that Greece should buy something else, without of course naming an alternative. With the money of the Greek taxpayer there are many solutions, but none for free. All vehicles do not have wireless transceivers so they will have to be purchased to be fitted to the 1200 M1117 ASV Guardian that will come in total. There are Greek companies that make such equipment as Intracom Defense, EFA Group and MILTECH. The cost of each new Mk19 grenade launcher is 17,000 $. If you multiply that by 1,200 you get a cost of 20 million $, without discounts. With discounts due to mass order we are talking about less than 12-14 million euros. The 12.7 mm M.2HB and 7.62 mm FN MAG machine guns are available in quantities in the Greek Army, the FN MAGs may need some modification at the base to be placed in the vehicles. M1117 ASV Guardian vehicles want transportation costs from the USA to Greece. Unfortunately, the Greek state is to blame for this because many vehicles that were on European territory were "lost". Fortunately, there are many such vehicles in California but the cost of shipping has skyrocketed in recent months. Again, the cost for each vehicle, to come to Piraeus or another port (eg Volos), reaches 10,000 to 15,000 $. That is less than 20 million $ for transportation from the USA. If we add up all these extra costs, then the Greek Army will have to spend 80 to 90 million euros for new wireless transceivers, new machine guns, new bombers and transportation. Of course, they will not need that much, because the Chief of the General Staff of the Army, during his last visit to the USA, secured some weapons. Greece will either buy the others or find them in its weapons depots. That is, at a very reasonable cost (estimated at around 40 million euros), Greece will acquire 1,200 vehicles with ceramic shielding, weapons and radios. The completion of the receipt of the vehicles is expected to take place within 2022. The valuation of the 1,200 M1117 ASV Guardian is 960,000,000 $ if purchased. Each vehicle, even today, sells for 800,000 $. The MEXAS ceramic protection of the M1117 ASV Guardian is superior to the protection of the Turkish MRAP design as their protection is of the category STANAG 4569 Level 3 & 4 while MEXAS is used up to MBT. If anyone is knowledgeable about Turkish MRAP let them know their opinion.
