How Xinjiang poverty-stricken desert villages get clean drinking water

For more than six decades 71-year-old Nasier Maitiniyazi had to carry buckets of water from a river to his home in the Uchkebron Village in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The water was dirty and difficult to transport. Then, in 2018, the Ministry of Water Resources made ensuring safe drinking water for the poor as its top priority. An experienced team was dispatched to the village by the Xinjiang Water Resources Department and after a long search they found a fresh spring in the valley eight kilometers away that now provides potable water to Maitiniyazi and other villagers.

The 'Xinjiang Three Gorges Dam': Altash Water Conservancy Project

The Altash Water Conservancy Project stands on the border between Kashgar and Kizilsu Kirghiz. It was started in 2011 with the aim of solving the basin's extreme seasonal flooding. The project costs nearly 11 billion yuan in total and is sometimes called the "Xinjiang Three Gorges Dam." In May 2020, the main part of the dam was finished, at a height of 164.8 meters. The project will be able to store 2.25 billion cubic meters of water when fully completed. It's expected to control flooding, relieve spring droughts and power the south of Xinjiang.

1.75 billion Yuan (250$ million) just for 15000 peole living in the middle of nowhere? Maybe only China would do this seemingly extremely dumb investment which guarantees no returns.
