The Delhi police on Saturday said that journalist Rajeev Sharma, who was arrested on charges of spying two days ago, was allegedly passing on sensitive information to Chinese intelligence agencies. They added a Chinese woman, Qing Shi, and a Nepalese man, Sher Singh alias Raj Bohra, have been booked along with Sharma under the Official Secrets Act after classified documents were recovered from their possession.

Sanjeev Yadav, the deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said Sharma was allegedly in contact with a Chinese intelligence official named Michael and passed on to him classified information related to Indian army deployments in the China-Bhutan-India tri-junction including Doklam. Yadav said Sharma had also allegedly given him information related to India-Myanmar military cooperation and other details about the border between India and China.

Police said Sharma was allegedly paid around $500 for each assignment and claimed that he had received around Rs 3 million since 2019. They did not specify how much he was allegedly paid before 2019. The payments, police said, were made through hawala, shell companies, and Western Union money transfers.

Police said that between 2010-2014, Sharma wrote for the Global Times (China). “Observing his columns, one Chinese intelligence agent named Michael from Kunming city of China contacted Sharma through his LinkedIn account and invited him to Kunming, China, for an interview in a Chinese Media Company. The entire trip was funded by Michael. During the meeting, Michael and his junior Xou asked Rajeev Sharma to provide inputs on various aspects of India-China relations. Between 2016 to 2018, Rajeev Sharma was in contact with Michael and Xou,” Yadav said.

The officer said Sharma had meetings with Michael and Xou in Laos and the Maldives once and briefed them. Besides these visits, Sharma was also allegedly in contact with Michael and Xou through e-mail and social media, police said.

Detailing Sharma’s alleged role after 2018, the special cell officer said, “In January 2019, Sharma came in contact with another Kunming-based Chinese entity named George. He visited Kunming via Kathmandu and met George. George was introduced as a general manager of a Chinese Media Company. During the meeting, George asked Rajeev Sharma to write and inform about issues related to the Dalai Lama. For this, he was offered $500 per article. George told Sharma that they would send him money through his company’s sister concern based in Mahipalpur, South Delhi, being operated by Qing.”

Yadav said Sharma was paid through shell companies. “Shell companies were operated by foreign intelligence to transfer funds to him. Two Chinese nationals -- Jhang Chang and his wife Chang-li-lia -- were running the companies MZ Pharmacy and MZ Malls, under fake names Suraj and Usha. They are both presently in China and on their behalf, Qing Shi and Bhora, a Nepali National (both directors of MZ Pharmacy) are presently operating the business from Mahipalpur.”

Sharma was arrested on September 14. Police said he was found in possession of confidential defence documents. He was produced before a court on September 15 and sent in police custody for six days. Sharma has filed a bail application, which will be heard on September 22.

There should only be death and castration for this kind of crime.

I find it stupid of politicians to go against instructions. If they were max 4 in each car and walked with proper distance then they're not violating the given instructions.

RIP to this braveheart and very sad that govt withdrew security for him some months back that most likely led to this....ref: https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/punjab/anti-terror-braveheart-shot-in-punjab-156956

Guptaji did a good episode here with a huge amount of context and history of the earlier period involving this Comrade:

As somewhat of an aside:

It is now much clearer to me why my father (as anti-congress as he is, far far more than I am) also absolutely despises V.P Singh's guts.....running quite contrary to his mother (my grandmother, rest her soul) estimation of him at the time and after... simply because in her opinion he (VP Singh) was against (I.G and post I.G) congress party. Similar reasoning led to her being against Narasimha Rao (simply because he is congress) whereas my father has much higher opinion of him. This marked defining features of most of the political arguments my father had with his mom in that era (late 80s onwards).

V. P. Singh was a wrecker; nothing more to be said about the creepy little creature.

I was very hopeful when Modi came to power that he would take police reform seriously. But nothing so far and the cops seem to be even more brazen now.

"We currently have two breeds of Indian dogs, Rajapalayam and Mudhol which we are training to use on a trial basis," said senior veterinarian of BSF Meghalaya.

Shillong:
The Border Security Force (BSF) in Shillong has decided to train two Indian dog breeds for patrolling in the border areas, and if the experiment is successful, it would deploy some more breeds.

Two Indian dogs breed, Rajapalaya and Mudhol, are being trained for use on a trial basis at present.

"We currently have two breeds of Indian dogs, Rajapalayam and Mudhol which we are training to use on a trial basis," said senior veterinarian of BSF Meghalaya.

"As soon as the training will be completed, these dogs will be introduced to the field for patrolling activities at the border area," he added.

The senior veterinarian said that if the trial will be successful, other Indian dog breeds will also be trained as military dogs. The training process of the dogs will take at least a year.

"Not only the BSF but the Indian Army also is preparing to include Indian dog breeds in the force," he said.

This happened in jungles of eastern India far from Pakistan. The terrorists are left wing Maoists. I just hope Pakistan does not get blamed for this. The vast region coloured red is where the Naxalites operate.

The Naxalite–Maoist insurgency is an ongoing conflict[16] between Maoist groups known as Naxalites or Naxals, and the Indian government. The insurgency started after the 2004 formation of the CPI-Maoists – a rebel group consisting of the PWG (People's War Group) and the MCC (Maoist Communist Centre).

RIP to our CRPF fallen. Apparently up to 30 naxalites were killed in this encounter too. Over the coming days, we will get more details.

There will be an investigation into what the mistakes in this operation were.

Though it has been a heartening overall trend w.r.t decrease if you look at the numbers 10 years ago and 10 years before that. Way fewer civilians are perishing from it compared to before.

The last few maoists are of the hardened variety and thus these are their dying pangs...most of the half-ways and nominals have given up arms and surrendered....and been rehabilitated.

BJP, Sanghis and Bhakts are far too busy labeling liberals in their absurd witchhunt as Urban Naxals rather than coming up with a coherent strategy to end the actual Naxal movement.

The major ambush was set up by placing an LMG in a house which opened fire at clear line of site injuring most of the party. They were hunted down while dragging the injured and retreating into the forest.

Welcome to forum,

However it went down (and yes the details so far make for very disturbing reading), it seems to be same old regular playbook of something got leaked/compromised from inside, for CRPF folks to be led into ambush like this en masse.

This has been recurring problem in India....rather than fix the qualitative issue for armed police (since deploying army is strict no-no)....it is simply a corruption-inflicted rote of just throwing brute quantity....little attention is given to the leadership, training and technology for the low-level warfare (amass, attack and then retreat and blend back in) that is found here essentially.

You need to ramp up quality from say 2 - 3/10 to well above 5-6 out of 10 to get basic chance of having dedicated, motivated well equipped units that intrinsically would be able to detect compromised individuals within them....as this is simply not regular policing or regular situation to begin with.

I suppose it is just not expensive or painful enough for politicians in end to have "X number of security forces dead" pop up at whatever frequency....they have been fully desensitised to Indian population bulk, status quo-ism and also Indian own population tolerance of this BS....especially since the "quantity" approach seems to have been "good enough" to get the situation to where it is today compared to before. Indian blood is simply too cheap still in grand scheme of things.

Bhupesh baghel is in Assam for last 2 months not sure who is running his state ... and it's not easy to operate in places where local populace is either scared or supporting Maoists and Maoists have a well-oiled intl network, I think such attacks will increase as they are slowly losing their grounds and forces are moving in the hotbeds of Maoists
