South Korea's LG Cancels US$7.7bn Indonesia EV Battery Project

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A South Korean consortium led by LG announced the cancellation of its electric vehicle battery supply chain project in Indonesia on Friday, April 18, 2025. The project was valued at 11 trillion won, or US$7.7 billion (around Rp129 trillion, based on an approximate exchange rate of Rp16,841 per US dollar).

Minister of Investment and Downstream Rosan Perkasa Roeslani explained that LG Energy Solution did not withdraw from part of its investment in the battery ecosystem project, but the Indonesian government asked LG to withdraw because the negotiations had been going on for too long.

Rosan said that negotiations with LG had been going on for five years since 2020.

“Earlier it was said that from there (LG) decided, actually it was more precisely from us who decided. That was based on a letter dated January 31, 2025 issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia. Why was that letter issued? Because, indeed, these negotiations have been going on for too long, while we want all of this to run well, quickly because the negotiations have been going on for five years," said Rosan during a press conference at the Presidential Office, Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (23/4) evening.

Rosan continued that the letter was then issued to LG, because Chinese investor Huayou had expressed its desire to invest in the battery ecosystem sector. Huayou's desire to enter the battery project consortium in Indonesia was expressed since 2024.
