They still would get Mogami class as medium/multi purpose working horse Frigate though, Escort for the heavier class of FREMM and Itver Huitveld class along with lighter Frigates and Corvettes we already had.

People tends to forget Iver Huitfeldt deal.

The need to buy from abroad arisen due to the urgent needs.

Yes, it's pretty obvious that we're looking to get 140m frigates from potentially 3 different sources due to urgent needs. But if you remember the Mogami deal news, it's stated that out of 8 warships only 4 that will be built by MHI, the remaining 4 will be built by PT PAL afterwards.

The timing probably fits, after MHI finished delivering the 4 and PT PAL also finished with the 2 Ivers they can start building the next 4 of Mogamis at PT PAL. That's of course assuming Fincantieri will build all the 6 FREMMs.

In the end PT PAL will have 2 heavy+medium frigates in their portfolio.

According to this Italian article PT PAL to build 3 units FREMM.

"As far as RID is aware, the first 3 FREMMs will be produced in Italy, as well as in Italy the modernization of the 2 MAESTRALE, which Fincantieri will acquire from the Navy once decommissioned, will be carried out, while the other 3 FREMMs will be built by the local PT PAL shipyard. More details in the next few hours and on RID 7/21."

Indonesia orders six FREMM frigates from Fincantieri

ROME – Fincantieri has signed to sell six FREMM frigates to Indonesia, a deal which CEO Giuseppe Bono said allowed the Italian yard to “assume global leadership” in the surface ships sector.

The contract takes Fincantieri’s confirmed sales of the frigate to 20, including ten to the Italian navy, two to Egypt and two to the United States, while the U.S. also has options for another eight and Egypt has options for another two.

In a statement released on Thursday, Fincantieri said that in addition to the FREMM sales, the contract also covered the refurbishment and sale to Indonesia of two Maestrale-class frigates which are due to be retired from service by the Italian navy.

Italy’s Leonardo will work on the Indonesian FREMMs, the statement said, likely meaning the firm will supply the combat system.

No value for the contract was given by Fincantieri, which will act as prime contractor and team with Indonesian shipyard PT-PAL on the program.

“The acquisition of an order of this magnitude allows Fincantieri to also assume global leadership in the surface ships sector,” CEO Bono said in the statement.

Last month, the U.S. announced a $553.9 million contract to acquire its second FREMM vessel – part of an expected order of ten – after the vessel was selected by the Americans last year.

The U.S. frigates, given the class name Constellation, are being built by Fincantieri at Marinette Marine, its controlled yard at Marinette, Wisconsin.

The delivery of the first U.S. vessel is expected in 2026.

Indonesia’s decision to acquire the vessel was likely influenced by the U.S. purchase.

This was the first proposal from the Japanese last year. It might have changed now under the "joint development" or "joint production" status that Japan had to take in order to stay within their "Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology" policy.

Still need more high end hull to build proper three fleets command unit (Indonesian Navy had three Fleets, in which the third fleet is only skeleton unit without any meaningful assets). That's why they need at least 18 larger surface combatant warships to properly build up 3 fleets according to 2-2-2 rules (two in active service, two in maintenance routine or stand by and two in heavy maintenance). Meanwhile according the plan they would be supplement by several smaller Frigates/Corvettes/OPV (most would be as replacement of Parchim class) but the plan is delayed further as they put priority toward the Heavy vessels first. The other delayed plan is utility helicopters, ASW helicopters and ASW Aircraft for the Navy. As the Navy is intended to build the surface combatant warships fleets and the silent service first as it was the most time consuming ones to be built and train the crew.
i see..so can we say poseidon will not come fo the moment mado?

Isn't Poseidon supposed to be for the Air Force?
i don't think so....IMO still supposed to be Navy had to operate it....well if the purchased of heavy surface combatant ( with massive number ) was the priority make sense if some ASW chooper or aircraft was delayed/postpone

Just like CN 235, both the Navy and Air Force had requirement for Poseidon as Poseidon is one of the most flexible platform out there

What would we classify our FREMM (General purpose or AAW)?

Leonardo surely making an inroads to Indonesia. They have been also working with PT. LEN to supply TNI AU's radar if I am not mistaken.

Sharing what to expect on FREMM CMS system
