Turkey's leading aerospace company Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) doubled its research and development (R&D) investments last year, spending TL 3 billion ($402 million).

According to a statement by the company, TAI’s R&D spending has displayed a sustained growth trend in recent years, which continued in 2019. The company monitors innovative technologies and integrates them into its products to reach a sustainable competitive advantage on a global scale. It has taken solid steps toward becoming a pioneering organization that influences the aviation and space fields, the statement added.

While TAI allocated TL 1.5 billion to R&D in 2018, it doubled this amount in 2019, spending TL 3 billion for R&D and innovation projects. With these numbers, 34.4% of 2019’s turnover was allocated to R&D expenditures.

In addition to the R&D investments, TAI continues to train human resources in technoparks that would fulfill the demands of the defense industry. It has also carried out activities to strengthen university-industry cooperation. The company employed 150 new personnel during the first sixth months of this year despite the coronavirus pandemic, reaching a total of 3,000 employees.

TAI was established in June 1973 under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Technology to reduce dependence on foreign sources in the country's defense industry. TAI acts as Turkey's technology center in the areas of design, development, modernization, production, integration and life cycle support processes of integrated aerospace industry systems, including fixed and rotary-wing air platforms, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and space systems.

This is the kind of cooperation we should push companies towards in Turkey.

An example to this could be danish business asking for qualified personelle, but there aren't any in Denmark. But at the same time these companies do not want to contribute to raising apprentices and such.

Aspilsan as well as İşbir were founded as TSKGV foundations like Aselsan, Tusaş, Roketsan and Havelsan, however in comparison to their progress and development these both have been neglected - time to catch up!

TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (TÜBİTAK MAM) announced that they have completed the process of producing the filters of N95 and N99 masks. TUBITAK MAM's the statement from the social media accounts, "Turkey's first N95 / N99 and FFP2 / FFP3 filter mask we produce" the statement said. According to the announcement, the laboratory phase of the production of the N95 and N99 mask filter has been completed. The Ministry of Industry and Trade assigned Tübitak MAM to develop the filter after the Covid-19 outbreak.

TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute Director Prof. Dr. Metin Usta, in the statement he made in the past months, announced that they have started to develop filters with lighter, thinner material and high impermeability than the existing N95 and N99 masks.

İzmir-based technology company aims to contribute to the domestic automobile

İzmir-based technology start-up company, which will produce nickel-based cathode used in areas such as electric vehicles and heavy equipment, shipping and household energy storage, aims to contribute to the domestic electric car.

There are chemists and mathematicians who can use artificial intelligence in materials science at the NiCAT Battery Technologies company, which started operating in Teknopark Izmir.

NiCAT Battery Technologies Business Development Director and Co-Founder Can Attal told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they recently received their core investments through the Keiretsu Angel Investor Network.

Stating that they appeal to all secondary, rechargeable batteries using nickel-based cathodes, Attal said, "Lithium ion with nickel cathode, which is increasingly widespread in electric cars and is predicted to be without an alternative, is the most important battery class in which our product is used." said.

Attal pointed out that this battery technology is also used in areas such as shipping, household energy storage, electrical work machines, and said, "In addition to lithium ion, we can also offer solutions to battery technologies such as nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, nickel zinc. Especially new generation zinc-nickel batteries, It has use in the field of energy storage in the electricity grid where new regulations have been introduced in our country. " he spoke.

Turkey at that moment for battery or no battery raw material production Attala pointing, said:

"ASPİLSAN recently laid the foundations of the lithium-ion production facility where our cathode technology is used. We continue our preparations to become its suppliers when they become operational. American ZincFive, the largest manufacturer in the field of new generation zinc batteries, will start testing our product and if it succeeds, we will be able to make our first export. We hope to be able to sell to leading companies in lithium ion cell production such as Samsung SDI, LG Chem. "

"Turkey has a geographical advantage in this area"

Attal emphasized that they have one of the few teams working in the field of artificial intelligence and materials and that this increases their competitive power, "We have a significant cost advantage because we carry out the material development researches carried out by the trial and error method of large companies with the support of artificial intelligence. Our customers, cell manufacturers, are generally in Korea and China. 'it features as well. Turkey has a geographical advantage in this area. Taking the Chinese market for many companies that want to expand in Europe and the Middle East a powerful alternative to Turkey. " found the assessment.

"Battery determines range and price in electric vehicles"

Stating that it is taken for granted that the technology in the new generation electric vehicles will be high nickel lithium ion, Attal stated that they think this will be the technology to be used in the domestic car.

Stating that it is not possible for them to sell directly to domestic cars because they produce intermediate goods, Attal continued as follows:

"We have the opportunity to be the supplier of the company that will produce the battery cells of the local automobile. The two most important issues in electric vehicles, range and price are determined by the battery. In current production conditions, one third of the cost of an electric vehicle is the battery pack. The most valuable product in the battery is the cathode material. The cathode material we produce determines the characteristics of the battery. Longer-lasting, high-range and low-priced electric vehicles will be possible with improvements in cathode material. We are ready to contribute as a domestic technology company in the value chain where the domestic automobile is located. "
