The Georgian website Agenda.ge reports that last weekend an agreement was reached between the Georgian Ministry of Defense and Israeli security companies to "rehabilitate and modernize" the country's air defense system and upgrade systems of the Air Force.
In agreements unveiled by the Defense Ministry last Friday, the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems company will work with the Georgian Defense Force to bring anti-aircraft assets up to required standards, and personnel manning the systems will also be re-trained. Meanwhile, Elbit Systems will use their expertise to upgrade electronic systems of air assets of the armed forces.
The deal is aimed at bringing the fixed-wing and helicopter fleet of the GDF up to NATO standards as part of an initiative announced by Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili this summer. The Georgian ministry has already sent some military aircraft to be thoroughly repaired and updated at factories of the local Tbilaviamsheni Company, with assets such as Su-25 ground attack aircraft, L-39 jets, Mi-24 attack helicopters and UH-1 utility helicopters set to undergo the program.
