Air-Force Italian Air Force boosts integration between fourth-fifth generation fighters

On 11 and 12 January 2021 the Italian Air Force carried out the third edition of the training activity called "Tempesta Perfetta - Perfect Storm" at the 32 ° Stormo in Amendola AFB, Southern Italy. The Tempesta Perfetta included the F-35A, F-35B, MQ-9 Predator aircraft belonging to the 32nd Wing, several F-2000 Typhoons from the 4th, 36th and 37th Wing and a G-550 CAEW from the 14th Wing. The event, which is part of the ongoing integration process between 4th and 5th generation systems, allowed for high-level training and optimized the various operating methods of the departments involved.

The challenging training activity was mainly focused in a modern Combat Scenario, where the ability to acquire and manage complex information, based on the principles of aerospace power, is decisive.

The operation took place over the skies of the Ionian Gulf and Calabria and resulted in a single complex Offensive Counter Air (OCA) mission, with simultaneous engagement of several targets highly protected by Double Digit Surface to Air Missiles (SAM ) and advanced aerial threats, as well as the engagement of a fast moving Time Sensitive Target (TST), through the combined use of all the aircraft involved and through the exchange of targeting and engagement data with a TST Cell.

We are concretely evolving in expressing operational capabilities that allow us to carry out the mission of the Italian Air Force: effectively guaranteeing aerospace power, regarding the ability to plan, conduct and control a complex air operation, something that only the Italian Air Force, together with few other Air Forces globally can do it effectively. The integration process between fourth and fifth generation aircraft is essential and continuous thanks to the high skills of the personnel capable of enhancing the technologies of weapon systems," the Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, General Alberto Rosso, said.
