The Defense Ministry announced on the 31st that it will commission one Aegis-equipped ship to replace the land-based interceptor missile system "Aegis Ashore" by the end of fiscal 2027, and another ship by the end of fiscal 2028. The plan is to start construction in fiscal 2012, and in the budget request for fiscal 2011 decided on the same day, related budgets such as design costs were included as "item requests" without specifying the amount in advance.
In December 2020, it was decided to build two new vessels to replace the Aegis Ashore, which had been abandoned for deployment to Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures. According to the Ministry of Defense, the standard displacement is about 20,000 tons, the total length is 210 meters or less, and the overall width is 40 meters or less, and it is expected to be the largest among the ships of the Self-Defense Forces. It is said that the larger size will reduce the shaking at sea and enable interception posture for a long period of time.

The crew will be about 110 people each, and the cabins will be basically private rooms. It is also considering adding the ability to intercept "hypersonic glide weapons," which are said to be difficult to respond to with conventional missile defense.
The ministry has allocated 5.5947 trillion yen, the largest ever, to its fiscal 2011 budget request. In addition, the item requirements include a number of projects, such as accelerating the deployment of long-range missile units, with a view to possessing "counterattack capability" (enemy base attack capability) to destroy the missile launching bases of the other country. , and may be even higher when the year-end budget is compiled. San Antonio Flight II LPD based BMD ship, at ~25000 tons. Although I expect the Japanese will go with destroyer based design (upscaled Maya DDG hull ??), as it will be equipped with anti ship and land attack missile too.

Imo, not necessary. Hyuga hull and island configuration would make it side heavy if they install the massive SPY-7 antenna on top of the superstructure that they took from the scrapped land based site.

Back in the olden days, a 20,000 ton warship was a VERY heavy cruiser.

In this new age of the missile, the drone, and the laser, that heavy cruiser is just a TARGET.

Just ask our peace loving Russian brothers.

I cannot answer that, I have asked myself the same question.

The whole world seems to be doing that, and I cannot see how a CV can defend herself anywhere within 400 kms of an enemy coast. To me the most dangerous weapon against a warship is the truck mountedd launcher. A F35 cannot wander about the enemy coast looking for a mobile truck.

Take the Phalanx and the Sea Ram, both have only a few shots at the ready and then are useless until it is reloaded and that takes a few minutes to do. An incoming missile at Mach 5+ and at sea level will give maybe 10 or 15 seconds to zap it.

I will even go so far as to say that Taiwan should spend the money on missiles, and not ships, planes or tanks. ANY enemy warship on the open ocean must remain over 400 kms of the enemy or she can be sunk or disabled.

At sea level no missile will be able to hyper cruise at Mach 5. because then, tremendous heat will simply blind the RF and EO seekers.

and Sea Ram is the last line of defense, before that, you need to pass through whole standard missile family, which would be really hard.

Poorly expressed by me, but the fact of 3 or 4 incomings no matter what altitude could see 2 of them arrive.
