kind of old news but...

KEY WORDS:

Ceramic Matrix Composites '' CMC prepregs are used for parts requiring thermal performance up to 2200°F''

Axiom Materials is the world’s largest producer of Oxide-Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite pre-preg materials. Ox-Ox CMCs have significant application momentum as high-temperature oxidation-sensitive components, particularly in the aerospace industry. With a lower density and higher use temperature capability than standard high-temperature superalloys, Ox-Ox CMCs allow jet engines to run more efficiently at higher temperatures, leading to fewer emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide, both of which contribute to global warming. In addition, Ox-Ox CMCs resist acoustic fatigue more effectively than standard high-temperature superalloys. Yet, both the industry transition from metals to Ox-Ox CMCs, as well as the engineering of new Ox-Ox CMC hardware, has been gradual as a result of its higher cost relative to conventional materials, lack of application-specific design data, and minimal process development for large-scale component manufacturing.

Axiom Materials is leading the expansion of CMCs into new industrial applications in oil and gas refinery pipes, refractory ovens, and other high-temperature products requiring a combination of high strength and longer lifecycles. Axiom is developing large scale manufacturing technology for low-cost Ox-Ox CMC unidirectional (UD) tape for use in automated tape layup (ATL) component manufacturing. Axiom’s process improvements, technical leadership, and investments are a real breakthrough for the broader use of CMCs.

Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) may be processed via conventional layup and curing techniques while only requiring a free-standing high-temperature sinter cycle to prepare them for high-temperature use.

Kordsa, a subsidiary of Sabancı Holding and a global player in the reinforcement technologies market, acquired US-based Axiom Materials. This acquisition of USD 181 million paved the way for Kordsa to be the only worldwide qualified manufacturer of Oxide-Oxide ceramic matrix composites.

Kordsa has stepped into the advanced composite materials industry with Composite Technologies Center of Excellence, conjointly established with Sabancı University. Kordsa has expanded its area of operations and competencies with its 2018’s acquisitions of Fabric Development, Textile Products and Advanced Honeycomb Technologies providing advanced composite materials to the aerospace industry. With the acquisition of Axiom Materials, Kordsa has completed the first phase of its goal to build a second Kordsa in composite technologies. Widely used in aircraft engines, the value-added materials produced by Axiom Materials have different applications in various industries and are considered as the material of the future. This acquisition, which is critical to develop Kordsa’s competencies in strategic and high growth areas, strengthens Kordsa’s potential to develop new products.

Pointing out the position of Kordsa in the Holding’s vision, as Sabancı of New Generation, Mehmet Göçmen, Sabancı Holding CEO, said: “Dynamic portfolio management and high technology-oriented investments are critical areas of focus in the transformation process of Sabancı Group. Kordsa, the flagship of our vision to grow in high value added industries, transforms into a company capable of producing advanced material technologies with its investment of approximately USD 300 million in composite technologies in the last two years. Following the acquisition of four US-based major companies, Kordsa built a business line worth over USD 150 million. With this new investments, Kordsa as the supplier of leading global companies, now becomes the only worldwide qualified manufacturer of Oxide-Oxide ceramic matrix composites. This key acquisition, which is a clear sign of our mindset to manage our business based on universal standards, will also support the development of our country in international markets”

Big news.
And what's equally important is that it's one of the old dogs (Sabanci and Koc holdings) that makes the investment and brings it in the fold :)

Capitalism and pragmatism is very important in the business world especially if you can bring important capabilities back to Turkey or into Turkish hands.

Axiom Materials Introduces New Narrow Tow Prepregs Targeted at Electric, CNG and Hydrogen Powered Vehicles

Kordsa’s US subsidiary, Axiom Materials, is pleased to contribute to sustainable mobility with the introduction of its tow prepregs. Compared to traditional two-dimensional composite counterparts, these carbon fiber composite tow prepregs are specially designed to withstand high temperatures enabling their usage in transportation applications including electric, CNG and hydrogen-powered aircraft and vehicles.

While lower CO2 emissions and lower ecological impact are the ultimate targets of mobility today, composite materials provide promising solutions to support this goal. Enabling the new federal government infrastructure plan and clean, sustainable energy initiatives, as well as aviation trends toward lower GHG emission power systems, Axiom Materials announced the launch of its latest carbon fiber composite narrow tow prepregs. Narrow tow prepregs are specially designed to improve safety, increase strength, reduce waste, and withstand high temperatures in applications such as critical battery containment, high-pressure vessels, and structural components that will support next-generation transportation.

Regarding this product range expansion Dr. Johnny Lincoln, CEO of Axiom Materials, commented, “Placing sustainability at the core of our activities, we are pleased to expand our capabilities in the composites field with 2 new prepregs. AX-6170 and AX-6201XL are flagship materials for us. They reflect our commitment toward advancing the goals of carbon neutrality, clean emissions, and environmental sustainability in advanced materials. Our new prepreg line offers marked advantages over traditional two-dimensional composite prepregs and hand lay-up methods. These products are designed for either Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) machines, or for machine-supported winding techniques used in the preparation of round, cylindrical, and rectangular three-dimensional vessels and structures. We are proud to say that our narrow slit prepregs improve passenger safety, enhance fuel efficiency, reduce waste, all the while enabling lower cost, higher performance, and more environmentally benign transportation.”

AX-6170-C-150GT700-0.25” RC37 prepreg is a ¼” inch wide cyanate ester tape for critical strength parts with 150 gsm weight, operating in high-temperature environments up to 600⁰F (316°C), such as lithium-ion battery containers. AX-6201XL-C-150GT700-0.25” RC37 is a ¼” wide toughened, epoxy carbon prepreg, also 150 gsm weight, designed for the manufacture of larger parts requiring excellent surface quality. Both prepregs may be cured using a vacuum bag oven or autoclave processes. The product is also available in a flame-retardant variant. Primary uses are large structural parts and pressure vessels for compressed nitrogen gas (CNG) and hydrogen fuel tanks for vehicles.
