First LCT-101 (A-584) has been launched on Thursday. KSY aims to deliver all three by June, 2026.
KHULNA, Jan 15, 2026 (BSS) - With a view to modernizing the Bangladesh Navy and enhancing its tri-dimensional operational capability, Khulna Shipyard Limited (KSY), operated under the supervision of the Navy, has undertaken a project to build three Landing Craft Tanks (LCTs).
As part of the programme, the launching ceremony of LCT-101, constructed with the Navy’s own technological capability at KSY, was held on Thursday by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hasan.
Senior naval and civil officials and others concerned were present on the occasion.
The LCTs will play a vital role in joint amphibious operations of the Army and Navy in coastal areas by transporting tanks, artillery and other heavy equipment.
In peacetime, the vessels will also be used for disaster management, humanitarian assistance and rescue operations.
In line with these requirements, the LCTs are being constructed at the Navy-run Khulna Shipyard using indigenous capability with technical support from Canada’s VARD Marine Design.
Each LCT is capable of carrying six tanks, or 12 armoured personnel carriers (APCs), or 18 military vehicles.
These vessels are expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s operational capability and serve as a notable example of progress in the country’s defence industry and technological development.
KSY is a leading state-owned shipbuilding and ship-repair organisation of Bangladesh, located on the bank of the Rupsha River.
Established in 1957, the shipyard was handed over to the Bangladesh Navy in 1999 during a period of financial crisis, marking a new beginning.
At present, KSY is widely recognised at home and abroad for building international-standard commercial and warships.
