LEONARDO: CONTRACT TO DELIVER GAME-CHANGING NEW RADAR FOR ROYAL AIR FORCE TYPHOONS



Leonardo has signed a contract to complete the development of a game-changing new radar, ready to be integrated into the Royal Air Force's (RAF) Typhoon fleet, which will transform the aircraft’s control of the air and provide additional electronic warfare capabilities.


The contract, awarded by BAE Systems to Leonardo, will see further development of technology and integration work on the European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mk2 radar by Leonardo and BAE Systems. BAE Systems leads the overall design, development, manufacture and upgrade of the Typhoon aircraft for the UK, Leonardo is the lead for the aircraft’s main sensing and survivability systems including its radar, defensive aids sub-system and infrared search and track system.


The contract is part of the UK Government announcement made in July 2022, to invest £2.35 billion in the continued technology advancements in Typhoon capabilities, as recognition of its long-term role supporting national security and defence priorities. The new radar will ensure the RAF Typhoons can simultaneously detect, identify and track various targets on land and at sea, providing greater Air Power capability.


A prototype of the state-of-the-art radar, developed and manufactured by Leonardo in Edinburgh and Luton, is undergoing specialist testing in a unique facility at BAE Systems combat air site in Warton, Lancashire. The work is expected to lead to initial flight testing in 2024.

The Typhoon aircraft is a highly capable and extremely agile multi-role combat aircraft, capable of being deployed for the full spectrum of air operations, including air policing, peace support and high-intensity conflict. The RAF Typhoons are deployed alongside F-35B Lightning II to provide frontline capability for the RAF.

NEW CONTRACT SEES MODIFICATION WORK START ON UK’S ‘EXCALIBUR’ COMBAT AIR FLIGHT TEST AIRCRAFT PROJECT

Following a successful initial design phase, a second Boeing 757 airframe has been purchased to be transformed into a flying combat air laboratory by UK-based SME 2Excel


Leonardo, the UK’s defence electronics champion, has announced a contract from the UK Ministry of Defence worth around 134million euros (115 million pounds) that will launch the next stage of the Excalibur Flight Test Aircraft (FTA) project. The FTA will support the introduction into service of a new combat aircraft, which will be at the heart of the UK’s Future Combat Air System (FCAS). This next generation fighter is being delivered for 2035 by the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), an international collaboration between the UK, Italy and Japan.


The Excalibur project is a key part of FCAS, which will include the crewed fighter and a broader range of capabilities such as uncrewed aircraft, F-35, information systems and weapon systems. Central to the development of the crewed fighter is the FTA; a Boeing 757 aircraft that will be completely overhauled, turning it into a flying laboratory for combat air technology.


As a founding member of the UK’s Tempest combat air partnership, Leonardo will primarily use the airliner to test new technologies being developed by the trilateral programme. The UK Tempest Partners, BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, Rolls Royce & MBDA, working together with the UK Ministry of Defence, are continuing to collaborate on a range of test and demonstration activities, including Excalibur, to enable the successful delivery of GCAP in the required programme timelines.


Phase one of the Excalibur project saw 2Excel conduct an engineering study into the 757 airframe to understand its construction in-depth, which entailed experts from UK industry taking the retired aircraft apart piece-by-piece. This was required so that the UK team would be able provide the appropriate regulatory evidence and design information to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and enable the second, modified aircraft to be certified for flight.


Having completed this phase of the project, the team has generated the knowledge required to undertake the modification of a second aircraft. That aircraft, a commercial jet bought from charter flight company Titan Airways, has already arrived at 2Excel’s facility in Lasham, Hampshire, ready for engineering. The new contract will cover the physical modification of the 757, as well as flight tests, certification and the work required to secure approval from the CAA.


The Excalibur aircraft will be adapted to host integrated sensors, non-kinetic effects (ISANKE) and integrated communications systems (ICS) that Leonardo and its international partners are developing as part of GCAP. This aircraft is expected to fly with the new technology within the next three years, when on-board scientists and engineers will test the sensors and communications systems whilst in flight.

LEONARDO UNVEILS NEXT PACKAGE OF UPGRADES TO SURVIVABILITY OF EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON

Leonardo, on behalf of the EuroDASS consortium (Leonardo, ELT Group, Indra and Hensoldt), has announced the next package of survivability upgrades to the Eurofighter Typhoon’s Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS). This builds upon the substantial progress in technology development already made, drawing on the EuroDASS partners’ ongoing investment in Typhoon’s defensive capabilities.


Designed to meet the requirements of Typhoon operators, the upgrades are being proposed for the Eurofighter four-nation Phase 4 Enhancement (P4E) package and will also be available for export customers.
The latest upgrade will increase the survivability of the aircraft and lays the foundation for the defence system’s integration with Typhoon’s highly capable E-scan radars. This includes all versions of the Typhoon E-scan radar comprising that already in service as well as variants currently under development by the Eurofighter partner nations.


The existing DASS, named Praetorian after the elite Roman bodyguard corps, protects Typhoon from threats including Infra-Red (IR/heat-seeking) and radar-guided missiles. The system’s integrated sensors and jamming equipment deliver situational awareness to the pilot and equip the aircraft with a digital stealth capability, achieved through advanced electronic deception techniques.


This latest phase will see the EuroDASS partners integrate a number of new capabilities, already at advanced stages of development, into the Praetorian system. This includes a digital receiver capability, which will allow Typhoon to better recognise modern and complex targets and their modes of operation, enabling it to deploy the appropriate countermeasures. The upgrade also incorporates a band extension allowing Typhoon to continue to operate in the increasingly complex, congested and contested electromagnetic battlespace of the future.


The upgrade will also include enhancements to signal processing algorithms and processor capabilities, delivering major advances in processing speed, capability and memory. This will allow the Praetorian system to make the most of its integration with Typhoon’s E-scan radar options, including the new ECRS Mk2 currently being developed for the UK Armed Forces. The newest radar options incorporate a powerful electronic attack capability and will complement the on-board jamming provided by the Praetorian system to deliver a formidable overall effect.


Leonardo is integrating the Praetorian system in Luton, where the company conducts advanced electronic warfare research, development and production. Development of the digital receiver capability has been led by German partner Hensoldt and the band extension work has been driven by Spanish partner Indra. Further ECM and WTP Cooler enhancements will be led by ELT Group.


At the 2023 Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in Fairford, UK, Leonardo will be showcasing the new capabilities on-board a Navajo test aircraft operated by its test and evaluation partner 2Excel.


Because the individual capabilities introduced under this upgrade are already mature following international investment, first flight trials employing the 2Excel Navajo equipped with the upgraded Typhoon hardware will take place soon after RIAT. Further trials on-board Typhoon aircraft are scheduled for early 2024.


Looking beyond this upgrade, the EuroDASS partners are also making progress on Praetorian eVolution, the proposed roadmap for the Typhoon’s future DASS that will ensure the aircraft retains its world-class level of protection for decades to come. The roadmap proposes advanced new capabilities including multi-platform electronic warfare and combat ISR functions such as high-precision targeting and advanced combat ID. Discussions amongst the four Typhoon partner nations (UK, Italy, Germany and Spain) continue to move forward, with all parties recognising the benefits of Praetorian eVolution in terms of future survivability, maintaining each nations’ onshore combat air skills base and ensuring future freedom of operation for Typhoon operators in an evolving threat landscape.

LEONARDO AND SIERRA NEVADA CORPORATION PARTNER TO EXTEND GLOBAL ISR REACH


Leonardo UK Ltd. and its U.S.-based subsidiary, Leonardo Electronics US Inc., today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with U.S.-based Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) that brings the companies together to jointly address a range of international defence and security markets. The project is designed to capitalize on each company’s technical expertise and draw on strengths in identified markets where they have relevant infrastructure and experience. With 40+ locations across 19 U.S. states, SNC will support the further development of Leonardo Electronics US Inc. as it expands its engineering, assembly and manufacturing capabilities. At the same time, Leonardo will leverage its success exporting airborne sensor products and close work with customers in the European, Middle East and Asia Pacific regions, and incorporate SNC’s capabilities to add value to relevant projects.

Leonardo and SNC have worked together previously on several projects for U.S. and international customers, with SNC selecting Leonardo as its radar supplier of choice for maritime patrol aircraft programmes. Most recently, SNC chose Leonardo to supply its Osprey 50 E-scan surveillance radar for the RAPCON-X intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft.

Both companies possess complementary technologies and capabilities that could immediately increase capability for the warfighter. SNC is best known for its unique mission applications, while Leonardo offers world-class sensors that span the electromagnetic spectrum. These range from radio frequency (RF), including radar and EW, to electro-optics (EO). Both companies own expertise in integration, with Leonardo at the forefront of deep sensor integration research as part of its work on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), and SNC’s ability to rapidly engineer, integrate ISR solutions, and re-configure aircraft of nearly any size and shape to create the best mission solution for its customers.

MOC PROGRAMME OF THE CAVOUR AND HORIZON-CLASS SHIPS AWARDED TO ORIZZONTE SISTEMI NAVALI


Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), the joint venture owned by Fincantieri and Leonardo with respective stakes of 51% and 49%, has signed, with the Directorate of Naval Armaments of the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate, the Maintenance in Operational Conditions (MOC) Framework Agreement for the Cavour aircraft carrier and the Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio Horizon-class destroyers of the Italian Navy.


The Agreement has a maximum total value of euro 190 million and will conclude at the end of 2028. The signing of the first implementation contract between the prime contractor OSN and Navarm will take place in the coming days, covering the first two years of service.


Specifically, the activities envisaged refer to the platform and combat systems and equipment of the units covered by the Agreement in the period 2023-2028, in order to ensure the maintenance of their operational conditions and the increased expertise of Navy personnel.


Fincantieri will be responsible for the in-service support activities of the platform systems and equipment, including the engine, automation system, electrical generation and air conditioning systems, manoeuvring and propulsion mechanisms, as well as the aircraft elevators of the Cavour ship and the helicopter transport system of the Horizon class units.


Leonardo will be tasked with all subsystems related to the Combat System, radar sensors, Combat Management System, launchers and weapon systems of the two classes of ships, at the La Spezia and Taranto naval bases. The Leonardo subsystems involved in the maintenance amount to about 50 pieces of equipment.

Leonardo confirms its leading position in the private helicopter transport market with new contracts in Latin America announced during official ceremonies held at LABACE 2023 (8-10 August).


Gruppomodena S.A. has been appointed official distributor of Leonardo helicopter types including the AW119Kx, AW109 legacy, AW169 and AW139 for the civil markets in Uruguay and Argentina. The distributor has also signed a contract for two AW119Kx single engine helicopters. A major player in Latin America for helicopter services, this partner is also an established operator of AW109 and AW139 helicopters for a range of roles including passenger transport, offshore transport, and rescue as well as an authorised service centre for the reference market. In addition, another private operator has placed an order for one AW109 GrandNew light twin engine helicopter, which will be operated in Brazil. All of these light helicopters announced at LABACE will feature customised VIP interiors and will be used for private/corporate transport in the relevant locations.


Furthermore, Leonardo’s distributor for the latest generation AW09 single engine model in Brazil, Gualter Helicopters (Aero Service Representação) has signed contracts for three aircraft for executive transport with three different end-users in the country. These latest achievements for the AW09 in Brazil come two months after the appointment of Gualter Helicopters, which had signed preliminary sales contracts for 20 units in March, providing evidence of the already anticipated strong interest from potential operators in acquiring the new type. Acquired three years ago by Leonardo, the AW09 perfectly complements Leonardo’s product range in the Long Light Single segment, introducing an all-new design aircraft to sustain long-term competitive positioning in this weight category.

Danish Army Piranha fleet to be equipped with Leonardo vehicle camera systems​


Using high-definition camera systems instead of windows means vehicle crews can operate day and night while completely enclosed in armour, maximising protection while maintaining situational awareness.


Leonardo’s vehicle camera system is already in service on-board Danish Army vehicles, including the JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator (HMEE) and WiSENT.


Today at DSEI 2023, Leonardo has announced a contract worth over £10M with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to equip more than 300 Royal Danish Army vehicles, including Piranha V 8x8 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and Caesar 8x8 ART (Artillery) platforms, with integrated vehicle camera systems. The technology will provide crews with enhanced drivers vision and local situational awareness, allowing them operate more effectively in hostile environments.


The order was placed in December 2022 under the framework agreement signed in 2016 between Leonardo and DALO to provide modular vehicle mission systems across the Royal Danish Army’s fleet of land vehicles, with each system tailored to the individual vehicle type and role. The new contract covers 309 Piranha V vehicles comprising infantry, engineer, repair, mortar, command post and ambulance variants as well as the Caesar 8x8 ART (Artillery) platform and wider fleet spares. Deliveries have already commenced.


The Leonardo vehicle camera system utilises a cross-platform modular design that comprises high-resolution infrared (IR) driver’s night vision (thermal/low light) cameras, daylight cameras, user displays, IR illuminators and other platform video sources. The system is compliant with the UK-led Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standard, which employs common infrastructure and system control interfaces allowing the utilisation of external inputs, such as video sources, from other sensors around the vehicle(s).


Since 2016, Leonardo has provided over 700 integrated camera systems for Royal Danish Army vehicles. These include the JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator (HMEE), which the Army first deployed in January 2022, and the WiSENT armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) and armoured engineer vehicle (AEV). The technology has also been used to support NATO allies in operations around the world.


The integrated vehicle camera systems on the Piranha and HMEE both include the latest version of Leonardo’s DNVS (Driver’s Night Vision System). This means that as well as conducting operations while fully protected against external threats, vehicle crews will be able to operate at night and in low-visibility weather conditions.


Leonardo’s latest-generation camera systems build upon the company’s decades of experience in providing situational awareness systems for the UK Armed Forces, equipping vehicles such as Mastiff, Warrior, Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), Warthog, Viking, Ridgback, Wolfhound and Challenger.

Global Combat Air Programme industry partners agree next steps on collaboration to deliver next generation combat aircraft



Defence industry leaders in the UK, Japan and Italy have agreed a trilateral Collaboration Agreement to deliver the concept phase requirements of a next generation combat aircraft for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).


GCAP is a strategically important partnership between the UK, Japan and Italy, which brings together the three nations and their respective industries to collaborate on shared military and industrial objectives in the delivery of a truly next generation combat aircraft in 2035.


The agreement between BAE Systems (UK), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan) and Leonardo SpA (Italy) reflects positive momentum and strong trilateral cooperation, and will involve the industry partners maturing integration, collaboration and sharing of information towards the next phase of GCAP.


The Collaboration Agreement supports ongoing discussions to set out long-term working arrangements and maturity of the concept and capability requirements for the next generation combat aircraft.


Herman Claesen, Managing Director, Future Combat Air Systems, BAE Systems, said: “We have maintained a high tempo of engagement with our industrial and government partners in Italy and Japan since the launch of GCAP. Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP): Advanced electronics partners zero in on joint project delivery set-up


The three nations’ sensing and protection leads are close to agreeing a commercial and operating arrangement to deliver the new combat aircraft’s on-board electronics


At the DSEI exhibition in London, the industry champions for defence electronics from the UK, Italy and Japan have announced that they are working towards agreeing a joint project delivery set-up for GCAP’s ISANKE & ICS domain (Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications Systems).


The companies, Leonardo UK representing the UK, Mitsubishi Electric representing Japan and both Leonardo and ELT Group representing Italy, are assessing a number of alternative operational and commercial models. The partners have identified that a joint project delivery set-up will be the most efficient and effective way of delivering the programme at pace, as well as ensuring freedom of action and modification for all three nations.


This latest development follows the signing of an ISANKE & ICS domain collaboration agreement, announced in March, and moves the partners closer to the creation of a permanent industrial construct. To meet GCAP’s 2035 target, the partners agree that new ways of working will be required and have held intensive discussions to reevaluate legacy programme structures, infrastructure and performance metrics. The objective is to create a transformative new model of international business and technical collaboration that allows for progress at pace.


ISANKE & ICS is the advanced electronics on-board the GCAP combat aircraft, providing the aircrew with mission-critical information and advanced self-protection capabilities. A core reason why the new GCAP combat aircraft is considered next generation, the new concept transitions from the traditional combat air model of separate airborne sensors to instead provide a fully integrated sensing, fusion and self-protection capability. At the same time, the integrated communications system will allow ISANKE to operate as a network across formations of crewed and uncrewed aircraft, as part of each nations’ wider, multi-domain system-of-systems.


In addition to commercial discussions, over the last few months the domain partners have also made significant progress on the technical side of the programme, with the ISANKE & ICS subsystem passing a three nation systems review. As well as virtual working, engineers from Leonardo, Mitsubishi Electric and ELT Group have come together in-person on multiple occasions as the domain has progressed towards the systems review stage. This key gate in the ongoing joint concept activity means that the partners have agreed on the high-level design of the ISANKE & ICS sub-system: what will the key blocks of the system be, where will they sit in the aircraft and what will they do.


Passing this gate has provided more certainty for the direction of research and development work and supports the new combat aircraft going into service in 2035. At the same time, all of the partners have progressed the development of a number of critical underlying technologies, including in the fields of radar, electro-optics and electronic warfare. The collaboration has also laid the groundwork for aligning the firm’s journeys of digital transformation as they prepare for more intensive joint engineering on across national borders in a secure manner.


The ISANKE & ICS domain partners represent some of the most skilled and cutting-edge engineering work in their three respective countries. Together, the partners expect to inspire and train a new generation of engineers and businesspeople who will be able to meet the challenging requirements of the next 50 years and beyond in the defence sensing and communications domain.

Italian Navy’s NH90 helicopter deliveries complete as state-of-the-art mission simulation centre is established at Maristaeli Luni Base


56 NH90 helicopters delivered, including 46 SH-90s for ASW/ASuW, and ten MH-90s for tactical utility transport

Wholly developed by Leonardo, the Full Crew Simulation Training Centre allows high fidelity customised mission training in all scenarios



The Italian Navy achieved a major rotorcraft capability enhancement milestone with the completion of deliveries of its NH90 helicopters combined with a dedicated simulation centre for its NH90 crews. The 46th SH-90A ASW/ASuW aircraft, assembled at Leonardo’s facility in Venice Tessera, has been deployed at the Italian Navy’s Maristaeli Luni Base and presented during an official ceremony attended by Italian Navy’s, Leonardo’s and NHIndustries’ dignitaries and representatives on 29 September. The helicopter also joins a fleet of ten MH-90As optimized for tactical transport duties and special operations bringing the total fleet of NH90s to 56 in service with this prime operator. The first Italian Navy’s NH90 was delivered in 2011. Since then, the whole fleet has logged in excess of 35,000 flight hours in multiple operations in Italy and internationally.


The completion of deliveries occurs as a unique Full Crew Simulation Training Centre is established and opened at the base, featuring a dedicated Level D Full Flight Simulator of the type in full MR 1 configuration (therefore, representative of the latest avionics standard), all fully developed by Leonardo and tailored to the Italian Navy’s needs. The new simulation environment allows for the SH-90 and MH-90 crews (including both pilots and specialised personnel) to be trained with the highest level of fidelity and accuracy (1 simulation hour being equal to 1 real flight hour) to carry out missions in any kind of operational scenarios to the benefit of effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The system is suitable for further evolution in the future, such as the possibility to be linked to other simulation assets in order to develop joint and multi-domain networked mission training. Additionally, the Full Crew Simulation Training Centre will deliver training services to NH90 crews from other countries.

LEONARDO CONTRIBUTION TO THE NH90 HELICOPTER

Leonardo is responsible for, or contributes to, the design, production and integration of a wide range of critical NH90 components and systems. These include the rear fuselage, main gear box hydraulic system, upper modes of the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), plant management system, power plant integration, NFH mission system (integrating sonar, radar, electro-optics, tactical link, electronic warfare system, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) interrogator, mission video recording and weapon systems management including air-to-surface missiles and torpedoes for Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) and Anti-Submarine (ASW) missions. Leonardo also integrates additional capabilities such as the Laser Obstacle Avoidance Monitoring (LOAM) system and the LEOSS-T electro-optical system as well as pintle-mounted Gatling-type guns, for specific customers.

Leonardo at Seoul ADEX 2023 to strengthen its partnership with Korea and promote its latest helicopters and defence electronics

Leonardo will attend the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (Seoul ADEX) - stand 199 in Hall F - from October 17-22. Leonardo has decades of heritage in Korea providing the latest helicopters, such as the world-class AW159 helicopter, currently in service with the Republic of Korea Navy and defence & security electronics. Today, the Republic of Korea's key civil and military forces conduct operations using a wide range of high technology Leonardo equipment.


At ADEX, the two world class helicopters AW101 and AW189 will be shown at the Leonardo booth to learn more on the latest technologies, high performances and superior solution on mission capability.


The AW101 embodies advanced design and technology coupled with long range and endurance, which provide operational persistence for all missions. The versatility of the AW101 platform and a full range of on-board equipment allow operators to configure the helicopter for a wide range of roles including Maritime, Battlefield/Personnel Recovery and SAR. This mission versatility, combined with the most spacious cabin in its class featuring large side sliding doors and rear access ramp, makes the AW101 the most advanced, flexible and capable multi-role helicopter available today.


The AW101 is by design able to operate in extreme weather conditions; it is fitted with a de-icing system and rated to operate in temperatures ranging between −45 and +50 °C. The aircraft's control systems allow the AW101 to maintain a stable hover in 74 km/h (40 kn) crosswinds. The AW101 is a medium-lift helicopter used for a range of applications by several countries including the UK, Italy and Canada among many others, and has been ordered by Norway in a search-and-rescue configuration which includes Leonardo’s Osprey AESA radar. The AW101 is a true multi-role helicopter capable of performing a wide range of roles including specialized roles like airborne mine counter measures, amphibious support and transport.


The AW189 is Leonardo’s latest twin-engined, super-medium helicopter for civil and public service applications. Leonardo is a main helicopter partner of Korea, having previously also provided the Super Lynx for the RoK Navy, the AW139 helicopter for the Korea Coast Guard and several regional fire services, the AW119K for the Korean National Police and the GrandNew and AW169 for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations.


The AW189 is the superior multi-mission solution for today’s demanding operations, combining exceptional payload and range with outstanding technology and safety. The type has proven extremely successful not only in the energy support market but also in the public service one for search and rescue, MEDEVAC, firefighting, disaster relief and law enforcement and has already been chosen by several operators in Asian countries for these roles.


Another major area of focus for Leonardo at Seoul ADEX will be the company’s RAT31 DL/M radar, a L-band solid-state 3D surveillance radar, designed to protect large portions of territory thanks to its wide range. The sensor is part of a family of long-range systems with surveillance, air defence, and missile capabilities, including ballistic missiles, in support of homeland security and operational missions. The RAT 31 DL/M can adapt to the challenges posed by a broad range of operational scenarios, including those where it has to face jamming and heavy clutter at the same time. Its highly reliable technology allows for a “graceful degradation”, meaning that even if some modules fail, the radar sustains its overall performance.


Leonardo has sold over 70 RAT 31 (Fixed and Mobile version) in 18 countries worldwide. The radar is a crucial component of NATO's air defence capabilities; its architecture meets the Alliance standards, enabling full interoperability during multinational missions.

Leonardo AW139 success grows stronger in USA for public services with Monroe County’s order for three helicopters



The aircraft will be operated by Trauma Star for air ambulance support in Monroe County, Florida with deliveries between late 2024 and early 2025


The operator adds to several others using the AW139 for a range of law enforcement, emergency response and firefighting across Florida, New Jersey, Maryland and California



Leonardo announced an order today for three AW139 medium twin-engine helicopters by Monroe Country in Florida. These aircraft will be operated by Trauma Star, a joint effort of Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and will provide air ambulance support across the Florida Keys from Lower Keys Medical Center and the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport. These AW139s will be delivered from Leonardo’s FAA-Certified Part 21 Production Facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between the end of 2024 and early 2025, after which it will undergo dedicated mission customization before replacing the County’s existing fleet.


“An extensive search for a replacement aircraft was made to update Trauma Star’s aging fleet of Sikorsky S76 aircraft with a newer, manufacturer-supported aircraft. The goal was an aircraft that would increase operating cost efficiency and reduce downtime due to unscheduled maintenance. The AW139 is the only aircraft available that will meet Trauma Star’s mission profile, able to fly the distance, carry our payloads and utilize our current landing zones” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.


Monroe County is the southernmost county in Florida, and the United States, and includes Key West, Marathon, Key Colony Beach, Layton and Islamorada. The County is spread across 3,737 square miles, 73% of which is water, and includes large portions of the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve.


“We are honored to begin our long-term partnership with Monroe County, and we are confident that the AW139 will provide Trauma Star with the capabilities they need to safely and effectively rescue and transport patients in Southern Florida.” said Clyde Woltman, Chief Executive Officer of Leonardo Helicopters US.


The order further demonstrates the success of the AW139 as the aircraft of choice for EMS and SAR missions across the world in its category and its growing presence in USA also among public services operators. With nearly 400 aircraft covering civil, parapublic and military operators that carry out emergency and disaster relief operations worldwide, more than 900,000 flight hours have been logged to date by the AW139 rescue-configured fleet globally, out of a total of 3.7 million FH for all missions. For similar services in USA in a mix of law enforcement, EMS, disaster relief and firefighting on behalf of local administrations, the AW139 is already operating in Florida, New Jersey, Maryland and California.


With more than 1300 units sold, over 1,100 in service for over 280 customers in around 90 nations, the AW139 delivers outstanding capabilities, technology, and safety to meet stringent requirements from operators for tasks in harsh conditions to maximize effectiveness. This type features state-of-the-art avionics with advanced navigation and collision avoidance systems to enhance situational awareness and reduce pilots’ workload, unmatched speed, power margins, and overall performance; the widest cabin in its category featuring high modularity for rapid reconfiguration; a unique 60+ min run-dry capable main gear box for enhanced reliability and safety; and a wide range of certified mission kits.

Leonardo: AW169’s skidded capabilities to grow further with 5,100 kg Increased Gross Weight and 11-seater configuration


The 5,100 kg Increased Gross Weight (IGW) will meet the evolving needs of the military and civil markets delivering higher weight category performance and capabilities with lower weight category costs


An 11-seater configuration and modular fuel tank will address rigorous requirements, particularly in the energy sector in terms of payload, range, and compliance with the latest standards


The latest enhancements and kits being developed leverage on the inherent growth potential of the successful latest generation AW169 helicopter



The AW169 light intermediate twin engine helicopter’s operational capabilities and range of options will grow further with the launch of a 5,100 kg (11,243 lb) IGW kit and an 11-seater configuration fully compliant with the IOGP (International Association of Oil & Gas Producers) Report 690. Both will be made available for the aircraft version with skid landing gear.


The 5,100 kg (11,243 lb) kit for the AW169 skid version, originally conceived to meet government and defence requirements for missions like troop transport and combat operations, will also respond to evolving civil and public service market needs leveraging multiple operational and performance benefits. Key factors to this capability expansion are the inherent growth potential of the type not requiring modifications in the design of critical components, and the performance increase packages, delivering greater engine and transmission power as well as improved aerodynamics in all conditions and for all applications. Compared with the standard 4,800 kg (10582 lb) Maximum Take-off Weight, the extra 300 kg (661 lb) available with the 5,100 kg IGW kit allows the embarkation of three more passengers or the addition of fuel for approximately one hour of operations. Existing operators of the type’s version with skids will be able to retrofit the 5,100 kg IGW kit to enhance their aircraft’s capabilities.


As an additional option, the 11-seater configuration, fully compliant with the IOGP Report 690 (Offshore Helicopter Recommended Practices), will introduce a new modular fuel tank system and two additional Type IV emergency exits in the cabin, increasing the total number from four to six. The 11 seats configuration will be available for the skid-fitted version in combination with the 5,100 kg IGW kit. This solution will allow the type to satisfy even more demanding offshore transport requirements in terms of payload, range, and compliance with IOGP latest standards.


This configuration will allow a radius of action of up to 75 nm with 11 passengers, therefore offering capabilities typically achievable with types with a MTOW exceeding 5.5 tons (intermediate class) at a light intermediate class cost of operations as well as granting latest safety standards compared with legacy helicopters. It will also deliver greater sustainability versus ageing types in the relevant weight category thanks to a more efficient powerplant, advanced navigation, modern support and maintenance approach, among other solutions. The Certification of the IGW increase is expected in 2024 while the 11-seater configuration with new modular fuel tank is planned for certification in 2026.


These latest operational capabilities will add to the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) certifications of the skid undercarriage and unique IFR, single pilot, Advanced Search and Rescue (SAR) Modes, both achieved in late 2022. With the skid configuration certification, the AW169 became the only modern CS29-certified aircraft able to offer all undercarriage solutions, further demonstrating the versatility by design of the type. The AW169 is also the only helicopter in its weight category that features Advanced SAR Modes. The performance increase packages previously developed had already enhanced engine performance and capabilities, transmission ratings and available payload through engine software updates and aircraft aerodynamics modifications, making the type the helicopter with the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.


The introduction of the AW169 has expanded Leonardo’s presence in the emergency medical service market and added more operators for law enforcement, disaster relief, and fire-fighting duties. It further reinforces the company’s leadership in the multi-engine VIP market providing operators with one more option fitting between the popular AW109 series and the bestselling AW139 models. It also adds one more solution for shorter-range operations supporting the energy sector and allows Leonardo to play a growing role in the new wind farm support field. Moreover, its dual-use design has responded to a range of government, homeland security and defence requirements for missions like surveillance, troop transport, combat operations, disaster relief and emergency response, fire-fighting, training, mountain rescue, and medevac.


Over 320 AW169s are on order today, with around 170 units delivered from the Vergiate final assembly line (Italy) to operators in over 30 countries. The global fleet has logged in excess of 170,000 flight hours in all kind of operations and conditions. The fleet leader has exceeded 3,700 flight hours in EMS operations in Sweden.

Polish Land Forces take delivery of their first AW149 helicopters


The Polish Land Forces has taken delivery of their first two AW149 helicopters during a ceremony held at the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in Tomaszów Mazowiecki yesterday, where they are entering service 15 months after the contract signing.


The new Polish military helicopters’ configuration allows combat support missions among others. Fully meeting the requirements of the Polish Armed Forces, the configuration will also include, among other capabilities, observation systems, small arms, guided/unguided rockets and missiles and self-defence systems. The armament, depending on the helicopter variant and configuration, is installed in the cabin or on the helicopter's external hard points.


The delivery follows the contract announced on 1st July 2022 including logistics, training, and simulator packages. The logistics package includes a stock of spares and consumable parts, as well as equipment for the ground handling of the helicopters. The training and simulator package includes comprehensive training of pilots and technical personnel and the delivery of a set of advanced simulators and training equipment.


The Polish MoD’s programme is based on localized production through PZL-Świdnik, which is the prime contractor also covering the integration of the helicopter's systems and dedicated armament. Thanks to local production, Poland gains not only state-of-the-art helicopters, but also a domestic logistics base and technical facilities located close to the Polish Land Forces. This delivery marks the quick reaction of PZL-Świdnik as contractor and local industrial partner of Polish Armed Forces for many decades. PZL-Świdnik, the Polish company fully owned by Leonardo, will also deliver support services for these helicopters and modernize them in accordance with the future needs of the operator.

Aerospace: carbon fibre recovery takes off


The Hera Group, through its subsidiary Herambiente, and Leonardo, through its Aerostructures Division, will work together to research the recovery of carbon fibres in polymer matrix composite materials used in aircraft parts. Thanks to the innovative plant built in Emilia-Romagna by the multi-utility and the know-how developed in the Leonardo Group’s laboratories, the precious material will be recycled with positive spin-offs for sustainability and circularity.


This marks the start of full-scale testing of a future industrial carbon fibre recovery activity in the aerospace sector using advanced technologies that permit its reuse as a secondary raw material.


Through its academic and industrial partnerships, over the years, Leonardo has developed in-depth expertise in recycling materials and processes and, aided by the waste recycling expertise of Herambiente, Italy’s leading operator in the environmental sector, is engaged in closing a circular industry-wide supply chain in this strategic sector.


Orazio Iacono, CEO of the Hera Group said: “This partnership, which is entirely consistent with the Hera Group’s goals of decarbonisation and development of the circular economy, is also strategically important in promoting short (reshoring) and circular supply chains in Italy and Europe. Thanks to this agreement with Herambiente, Leonardo is even more committed to maintaining the circular value of waste, reducing the use of virgin raw materials and using recycled materials for internal applications, as laid out in the Group’s broader Sustainability strategy.”


Technological research and innovation are the enabling factors for creating circular business models in line with the Leonardo Group’s sustainability strategy and international multilateral commitments. Circular models and practices are becoming increasingly key to competitiveness by supporting innovative processes and the ability to attract talent.


The agreement is strategically significant since Europe is very much lacking in virgin carbon fibre production. Thus, developing supply chains capable of regenerating valuable resources locally will help support the process of European industrial self-sufficiency.


Leonardo’s Aerostructures Division will give Herambiente some of the waste fibres from constructing the components of some of the best-known civil aircraft in the commercial aviation sector. To mention a few examples, the stabiliser of ATR turboprops, the fuselage and horizontal stabiliser of the Boeing 787 or, again, the tail planes of the Airbus A220.


At the innovative plant under construction in Imola, near Bologna, Herambiente will subject this waste to pyro-gasification, and the (gasified) composite material resins will be separated from the carbon fibres using hot technology. This process, developed with the help of the Department of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna and Curti SpA of Castelbolognese, near Ravenna, will regenerate fibre with performance comparable to new, also based on studies on the subject carried out by Leonardo.

LEONARDO ATTENDS DUBAI AIRSHOW HIGHLIGHTING AI, SPACE AND CYBER SECURITY AS NEW SECTORS TO BUILD A STRONGER PARTNERSHIP WITH UAE

Leveraging a solid presence in the United Arab Emirates, Leonardo is attending the Dubai Airshow 2023 (13-17 November), highlighting its core competencies in the electronics and helicopter sectors, with systems and training solutions as well as support services. The Company, however, is also looking at the strong national interest in newer developing and technology innovation fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Space and Cyber Security.


Leonardo has a 50+ years presence in UAE, one of the largest export markets for the Company, and with a highly diversified range of products, services, and collaborations, both in the civil and defense sectors. More than 100 helicopters are used in the country for VIP transport, energy industry support, rescue and security, with one of the leading logistics centres established by Leonardo with the local partner Abu Dhabi Aviation. Moreover, 45 ships are in service with the Navy's feature systems, radars, communication systems, and artillery supplied by Leonardo. Notably, the Aermacchi MB-339 trainer and the relevant training capabilities have been provided to the Al Fursan aerobatic team.

Leonardo now aims to strengthen the strategic partnership with the country, expand the collaboration with local companies and institutions, both industrially and technologically, and deliver training for highly skilled professionals. As an example, in the space sector, Leonardo's industrial expertise in general terms covers the entire value chain: satellite and orbital infrastructure manufacturing, equipment and high-tech sensor production, satellite service management, propulsion and launcher systems. Therefore, with this expertise, Leonardo is well-positioned as an ideal partner for initiatives in the space sector.


Cyber Security can be another vital area of interest. Together with the recent cooperation with Khalifa University to offer certification and training programs in Abu Dhabi, the Company is ready to provide the country with its know-how in digital infrastructure resilience against cyber-attacks and response capability. Cyber Security increasingly involves all sectors and will be even more so in the future. This will require a solid effort to secure not only digital and physical infrastructures but also systems and platforms, communications, and mobility since their early design stages.

Leonardo can support government and institutional agencies and authorities in their digital transformation plans to benefit communities’ security and service quality.


At the Dubai Airshow, Leonardo is also presenting technology capabilities, confirming its solid and competitive position in core sectors. The Company is displaying the TMMR (Tactical Multi-Mission Radar), a multi-domain dual-use radar suitable for anti-drone and Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) for short-range air defense, platform, vehicle, territorial and infrastructural protection. Additionally, the Osprey multi-function electronically scanned array radar for land and maritime surveillance.


An Italian Guardia di Finanza's AW169 helicopter is on static display, featuring one of this type's most recent, complete, and sophisticated configurations with several proprietary technologies in integrated sensors and mission equipment. This aircraft will carry out a demonstration tour in the country over the next few weeks. The introduction of skids, the performance increase, and the certification of dedicated SAR – Search and Rescue modes, together with the future advantages of an increased gross weight and larger capacity, will make the AW169 the ideal solution to modernize the fleets used in the region for public services and energy industry support.

LEONARDO AND THE SECRETARIAT GENERAL OF DEFENCE / NATIONAL ARMAMENTS DIRECTORATE SIGN A CONTRACT TO PURCHASE A SECOND C-27J FOR SLOVENIA​


The Purchase Contract comes under the G2G agreement between Italy and Slovenia to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.


Leonardo and the Air Armaments and Airworthiness Directorate of the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate signed a Purchase Contract to supply the Slovenian Defence Ministry with a second C-27J Spartan aircraft and related logistics and training services.


The contract follows the Italy-Slovenia Government-to-Government agreement (G2G) signed on 17 November 2021, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.


Dario Marfè, Senior Vice President of Commercial, CSS&T & Proprietary Programs Business of Leonardo’s Aircraft Division, said: ‘Deployed in the most challenging geographic, environmental and operating contexts, Leonardo’s C-27J Spartan is an aircraft capable of performing various types of defence and civil protection missions. Extensive experience with air forces worldwide makes it the ideal aircraft for military transport missions, paratrooper and materials airdrops, ‘last mile’ tactical troop support, special forces operations, medical battlefield evacuation, humanitarian assistance and natural disaster response.’


The C-27J Spartan Next Generation features new avionics in a glass cockpit with five multi-functional colour screens, a radar system for tactical transport missions and advanced communication systems. The system architecture ensures interoperability with other transport aircraft. It is easy to integrate with in-flight refuelling, self-protection, secure communications and ballistic protection systems to operate in high-threat environments, transporting materials, light vehicles and personnel wherever needed.


With multiple roll-on/roll-off mission kits and easily installable and transportable roll-on/roll-off mission systems, the C-27J can be quickly transformed into the configuration required for the current mission. The new Fire Fighter configuration, also previously purchased under the intergovernmental agreements between Italy and Slovenia, features the second-generation palletised MAFFS II (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) from United Aeronautical Corporation, world leader in advanced aerial fire-fighting application systems.

Leonardo’s presence in Latin America’s energy support and super-medium helicopter category market grows further with OHI’s AW189/AW189K order

The world’s most successful super-medium class helicopter, the AW189, grows its presence further in the energy support market and Latin America with an order placed by leading helicopter operator Omni Helicopters International (OHI) for three units, including two AW189s (powered by General Electric engines) and one AW189K (powered by Safran engines).


This latest contract follows a significant Leonardo fleet expansion at OHI, starting with eight AW139 intermediate twins and two AW189 super medium helicopters procured since 2021. It also marks the entry of the AW189K variant into the Latin American market following OHI's introduction of the AW189 model in this region. The presence of both versions will allow the operator to meet different mission requirements while maintaining the unique combination of efficient long-range, high endurance, and large-capacity operations with lower operating costs compared to larger, heavier types.


OHI is focused on providing air mobility solutions to the offshore Oil and Gas sector, as well as Onshore Utility, Unmanned Air Vehicles and Urban Air Mobility. Its customer-first culture has allowed it to grow rapidly alongside discovering new oil reserves in Brazil and Guyana that are increasingly distant from the coast. Unique features of the helicopter include the main transmission’s capability to run without oil for 50 minutes and a built-in Auxiliary Power Unit. The AW189 is available with more than 200 certified kits and delivered with a comprehensive support and training service package tailored to meet specific customer requirements to maximize mission effectiveness and safety of operations. As a recent example, the type obtained certification for an automatic data transmission system enabling the aircraft to transmit performance data to a ground station using satellite communication in flight, 4G cell connectivity, or Wi-Fi when on the ground. It offers a secure way to share an accurate picture of each flight so that Leonardo experts can assess data quickly, thus optimizing maintenance and support. Nearly 120 AW189s have been ordered, and almost 90 delivered to operators worldwide to date.
