The Israeli newspaper “Yediot Aharonot” reported that the Israeli army had removed its Merkava-2 tank from regular and reserve service, after nearly 40 years of its use as a main tank in hostilities, in a ceremony attended by former and current officers in the armored units.

The Merkava-2 was produced between 1983 and 1989, and it underwent many developments, as a result of its experience in the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. This Israeli tank, which weighs up to 60 tons, was distinguished by the durability of its developed armor to limit the effectiveness of the rocket-propelled grenades that the Palestinians were using in Lebanon before they left From it, the ability to move in rough terrain. The Merkava-2 was followed by two versions: Merkava-3 in 1990 and Merkava-4 in 2004.

It’s the end of an era. That tank was imo ahead of it’s time and been adapted to the changes in the region.

Actually it was quite simple and outdated for its time (900 hp engine, 105-mm gun, no panoramic sight). But despite it it was adequate and did its job..
