I am not a fan of Erdogan but I think the state has realized they cannot stop a federal state in Syria. That‘s why they started the reconciliation process with PKK. Given strong US and Israel backup, the cost of attacking SDF will be very high for Turkey. Especially, economically it will be ruinous. The alternative strategy they follow now is to delay and restrict the degree of autonomy for SDF in Syria as much as possible. This we are doing by barking loud. I would also suggest some controlled tension on top of this by some limited military incursions here and there without provoking US too much. With this strategy we can gain enough time to get stronger militarily and economically. Currently we are just a nice prototype weapon systems paradise. In the near future we can become something like Israel, powerful militarily but surrounded by enemies Greece, Russia, Iran, and Israel and PKK at the south. Still, as long as we are strong militarily, technologically, and economically and Europe is dependent on us for its defence, we have more leverage in the world it may not matter that much, it may even motivate us further. And if the south ever makes the mistake of wanting more, than they should know no one will be able to help them at that time.
