Well, could be useful against cruise missiles.
Then they should specifically claim a very-low altitude engagement. In fact they claim a medium altitude solution.
I don't give any possibilty for this AD to engage terrain hugging cruise missiles, as is.

Russia's Ministry of Defense announced last weekend that the Russian Strategic Missile Forces have received 70 Typhoon-M 8x8 armored vehicles designed to conduct radio, optical and infrared surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The Typhoon is also used as a counter-sabotage vehicle.


The Strategic Missile Forces are part of the Russian armed forces branch that controls Russia's land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Those forces currently operate eight types of missile systems: the silo-based Voyevoda, Stiletto, Topol-M, Yars, and Avangard ICBMs, and the mobile Topol, Topol-M, and Yars RS-24 ICBMs.


The Army Recognition website said that the Typhoon-M, also called the BPDM 15TM56M, is used by the Strategic Missile Forces for defense of Yars RS-24 missiles. The vehicle's crew consists of the driver, commander, gunner, radar operator, and drone operator. The hull of the vehicle can also accommodate four military personnel. For self-protection, the vehicle has a remotely operated weapon station with a PKTM 7.62mm machine gun.


The Typhoon-M was specially developed for the Strategic Missile Forces based on the BTR-82 armored personnel carrier chassis. It supervises forces using radar, optical and infrared bands, and is said to be able to strike enemy reconnaissance units. The Typhoon-M is equipped with different types of reconnaissance and surveillance equipment including a TKN-4S night vision sight and Kredo-1 ground surveillance radar. The vehicle is also equipped with an electronic warfare suite able to detect or jam hostile radio communications or electronic attacks, according to the report.

The website adds that one of the main features of the Typhoon-M is the onboard Eleron-3SV drone used to perform reconnaissance and surveillance missions. The small unmanned surveillance aircraft has a maximum range of 25 km but is generally used to carry out missions at a maximum range of 5 km for two hours. The drone has a camera capable of saving footage on an internal memory card or broadcasting video back to the command unit with a maximum range of 5 km.

The 40N6 is an extremely long range, hypersonic, Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) designed to engage low maneuverable aerodynamic targets at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. The new missile is the weapon of choice against Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, tankers and electronic warfare aircraft which are highly valuable and also feature low maneuverability. Its guidance system will consist of both an active and a semi-active radar seeker. The 40N6 was developed to be integrated along the S-400 Triumf air defense system engaging primarily low maneuverable aircraft at long ranges. Nevertheless, the missile seems to be able to engage fighter aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles. Basically, the 40N6 is a ballistic surface-to-air missile which completed the preliminary tests in December 2009 after being under development since at least since 2003.

Unconfirmed data suggest that the missile can hit targets at the maximum altitude of 185 km. The pre-production batch of 40N6E missiles was manufactured in late 2013, according to open sources.

DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION
The 48N6E rocket was developed at the Fakel Design Bureau, until 1991 under the leadership of P.D. Grushin, since September 1991 under the leadership of V.G. Svetlova.
Serial production has been launched at the Leningradsky Severny Zavod and Avangard MMZ (head plant).

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The 48N6 rocket is based on the concept of guaranteed reliability, operates in a sealed transport and launch container and does not require checks and adjustments during its entire service life. The 48N6E missile, in addition to the S-300PMU1 complex, is also used in the S-300F Rif shipborne anti-aircraft missile system.

According to the information published on page 147 of Volume V of the Arms of Russia handbook, the 48N6E missile provides:
- destruction of targets with speeds up to 10,000 km / h at a distance of 5 to 150 km in an altitude range of 0.01 to 27 km.
- low-flying targets at altitudes of 50-100 m are struck at ranges of 28-38 km,
- tactical ballistic missiles (in the presence of target designation) - at a distance of up to 40 km.
The mass of the rocket is 1800 kg, including a warhead weighing 143 kg,
Length - 7.5 m,
Diameter - 519 mm,
The span of the aileron rudders is 1134 mm.
By the time the fuel burns out, the rocket reaches its maximum flight speed of 1900-2100 m / s and then flies by inertia.

5V55 ( for S300)
The system included missiles of the 5V55 type (development began in the mid-60s), created by the MKB "Fakel" them. Academician P.D. Grushina (Moscow) and produced at PA "Severny Zavod" (Leningrad). Their launch was carried out vertically from the TPK, in which the missile defense system could be stored for 10 years. The rocket was thrown out of the TPK tube using a gas catapult to a height of 20 m, while its control aerodynamic surfaces were opened. Gas rudders, at the commands of the autopilot, turned the rocket to a given course, and after turning on the sustainer single-stage engine, it rushed to the target.

The missile is designed to engage modern and future air targets, including strategic and tactical aviation, cruise missiles, as well as ballistic and tactical missiles of various bases and other air targets in various conditions of a combat situation.

Single-stage rocket 5V55R with normal aerodynamic configuration, unfolding of control surfaces after launch.

The rocket is stored in an airtight container and does not need testing and tuning during its life.

The missile is equipped with a highly efficient solid-propellant engine, and contains radio control units, an onboard control system (made as a monoblock), and a highly efficient fragmentation warhead.



The missile is launched vertically by a catapult without first turning to the target.

After starting the engine, the rocket is deployed to the target.

The 9M33 missiles are 3.158 m (10.3 ft) long, weigh 126 kg (278 lb) and use command guidance. There is also a backup low-light optical tracking system for heavy ECM environments. The latest 9M33M3 missiles have an increased total weight of 170 kg (375 lb) in order to provide the extended range coverage and larger warhead. Propulsion is provided by a dual-thrust solid fuel rocket motor. Both versions feature a missile speed of around Mach 2.4 (peaking at around Mach 3) for a maximum target engagement speed of around Mach 1.4 for the original missile and Mach 1.6 for the M2\M3 missiles. The warhead for the initial and M2 versions weighs 19 kg (42 pounds), increased to 40 kg (88 lb) in the M3 version to improve performance against helicopters. All versions have impact and proximity fuzes.

Engagement range for the early versions is approximately 2–9 km (1.3–5.6 miles) and engagement altitudes of between 50 and 5,000 m (164–16,400 ft). The 9M33M2 "Osa-A" missile extends the ranges out to 1,500–10,000m (1–6.2 miles) and engagement altitudes to 25–5,000 m (82–16,400 ft). The 9M33M3 missile greatly enhances the altitude engagement envelope to 10–12,000 m (33–42,500 ft), and as such are also able to fly further (about 15 km/9 miles) but the system is not able to engage targets at longer ranges, due to other factors such as the radar tracking of the missiles.

Flight design tests (LKI) of the Zircon hypersonic missile from the surface carrier - the frigate "Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov" of the Northern Fleet - have been successfully completed, and state tests will begin in the near future. This was reported to TASS by a source in the military-industrial complex.
"LKI" Zircon "with the use of the frigate" Admiral Gorshkov "has been successfully completed. Four launches have been made. All missiles hit the" peg "(the center of the conditional circle into which the rocket should hit)," he said.
According to him, approximately in May-June, the state tests of the Zircon from the frigate will begin. "There will be several launches," he added.

Russia would be forced to defend itself if Western nations go through with plans to station short- and long-range missiles in Europe, a Moscow diplomat has warned, insisting they could be used to target the country’s air defenses.
In a statement released on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Washington was increasingly discussing proposals to deploy rocket launchers to the continent. Previously banned by the INF Treaty, research and development has reportedly resumed since the pact was torn up in 2019 by then-US President Donald Trump.
The spokeswoman argued that “the British military has now joined in with the openly hostile and destabilizing rhetoric,” citing intentions to upgrade its missile launch complexes to “make it possible to deliver deep missile strikes, in order to neutralize enemy air defense systems.”

Russia continues to receive fresh orders for the deliveries of S-400 Triumph air defence systems from foreign countries, Valeria Reshetnikova, the press officer of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), said on Monday. This reported by Sputnik.
"We acknowledge a continuing interest of other potential buyers in S-400, Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation is receiving respective requests. Today, only this system is able to provide the guaranteed destruction of both cruise and ballistic missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles of different classes," Reshetnikova said, commenting on S-400 delivery time to India.
According to her, Russia and India continue their work on the contract concerning S-400 supplies in accordance with the plan. The sides will announce its delivery time soon.
In March, FSMTC chief Dmitry Shugaev said that Russia has started negotiations with as many as five countries on S-400 deliveries.

Russia’ Rezonans-N radar, capable of spotting hypersonic missiles and deployed on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in November last year, will enter service no later than in June 2021, Rezonans Science and Research Center Director General Alexander Shramchenko has told TASS. "The third Rezonans-N radar station will go on combat duty on Novaya Zemlya this May or June," he said.

Two more stations, the fourth and fifth overall, will enter service in the Arctic region by late 2021, the official added. "By the end of the year, we plan to put into operation two more Rezonans-N stations in the Arctic zone - in Gremikha and Zapolyarnoye," he said. In his words, the radar in Zapolyarnoye, some 30 km away from the Russian-Norwegian border, will ensure "round-the-clock control of the airspace above northern regions of Norway and Finland."

Rezonans radars operate in the meter band and employ the principle of wave resonance, which allows detecting aircraft based on stealth technology and also hypersonic targets flying at a speed of up to Mach 20. The radar is capable of detecting targets and issuing target acquisition on aerodynamic targets at a distance of 600 km and at a range of 1,200 km on ballistic targets, at an altitude of up to 100 km.

The first and second Rezonans-N stations have been successfully operating near the towns of Shoina and Indiga.

MOSCOW, April 26. /TASS/. Russia’s Aerospace Force has successfully test-launched a new interceptor missile of the country’s anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defense system at the Sary-Shagan proving ground in Kazakhstan, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

"The combat team of the Aerospace Force’s air and anti-ballistic missile defense troops conducted another successful test-launch of a new missile of the Russian anti-ballistic missile defense system at the Sary-Shagan proving ground (the Republic of Kazakhstan)," the ministry said in a statement.


As Aerospace Force Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Formation Major General Sergei Grabchuk said, "the ABM system’s new interceptor missile reliably proved its inherent characteristics while the combat teams successfully accomplished the task, striking a mock target with the required accuracy."

The general earlier said in an interview with the Defense Ministry’s Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper that the latest interceptor missiles would make it possible to boost the combat capabilities and improve the characteristics of the country’s new ABM system.




As he specified, an interceptor missile that destroys enemy warheads develops a speed of over 3 km/s or more than four times the speed of a Kalashnikov assault rifle’s bullet.


The ABM system operated by Russia’s Aerospace Force is designated to shield the country against airspace attack weapons.

The trials of the latest S-500 anti-aircraft missile system are successfully nearing completion and the system is next to be supplied to the troops, Russian President Vladimir Putin said while opening a meeting with the leadership of the Defense Ministry and defense enterprises on Tuesday.

"Over 70% of surface-to-air missile regiments in the Aerospace Force have been rearmed with advanced S-400 systems. The S-500 system whose trials are successfully nearing completion is next to be delivered to the troops," Putin said.

As the Russian leader said, "the latest weapon systems and military hardware are intensively arriving for the Army and the Navy, the potential of the nuclear triad has strengthened substantially and the Navy has expanded its combat capabilities, especially with warships carrying Kalibr cruise missiles."
The Tsirkon shipborne hypersonic missile system is at the final stage of trials, Putin added.

"Let me note that defense enterprises and the Defense Ministry have established effective interaction in the deliveries and maintenance of armaments and hardware over their entire life cycle: from their development and serial production to maintenance and repairs," the Russian president said.

Iskander-M operational-tactical launchers received a new missile. It is a stealth weapon that maneuvers to create additional problems for air and missile defense. The new missile was for the first time engaged at a 2020 exercise, the Izvestia daily writes quoting Defense Ministry sources. They said the creation of the missile began in 2016. It is currently in a high state of readiness. The missile was tested in 2020 at Kapustin Yar range during an exercise of missile and artillery forces.

The new Iskander-M missile is coated with radio-absorbing materials, is highly maneuverable, and can destroy targets at a distance of 500 kilometers. The missile belongs to the air ballistic class. “The new weapon is likely a development of 9M723 air ballistic missile, which has been engaged by Iskander-M for several years,” expert Dmitry Kornev said. “The form of the body and nose had to be upgraded and new materials used to decrease the radar signature. The controls have likely changed as well, as super maneuverability is reported,” he said.

Several years ago Designer General of the Machine-Building Design Bureau (KBM) Valery Kashin said new missiles were designed for Iskander-M, which can fire both ballistic and cruise missiles. The round of Iskander-M munitions currently includes five ballistic and two cruise missiles. They allow destroying various targets and the strike is difficult to repel by available air and missile defense. “Quasi ballistic missiles can maneuver and are guided during the whole flight,” Kornev said.

Modern Russian and foreign air and missile defense can intercept ordinary short-range ballistic missiles. Iskander missiles were designed for unpredictable maneuvering with 20-30 overload to complicate interception. The missiles are universal and can carry various warheads: high-explosive, fragmentation, piercing, cluster. There is also a nuclear warhead. Iskander-M missiles can self-guide by the radar or optical image. The missile itself adjusts the trajectory at the final stage of the flight.

Upgraded missiles have been designed for Iskander-M since it was accepted into service. In 2019, the United States said 9M729 cruise missile exceeded the 500-km range restricted by the INF Treaty. Washington used the accusations as a pretext to withdraw from the INF.

The Russian military said 9M729 has a range of 480 km that is within the INF limits. It differs from the previous 9M728 by a higher power warhead and upgraded guidance system.
