I believe a TRG series missile has speed past mach 3.
Zircon is a hypersonic missile, and that means it's Mach 5+
TRG230 and TRG300 have top speeds of 4.2 Mach. Bora achieves hypersonic speeds. But these speeds are achieved as the missiles are diving towards Earth in the rarified layers of atmosphere.
Depending on their angle of descents and their aerodynamic structures, these missiles lose a lot of their momentum in their terminal phase. Due to the fact that they are basically quasi ballistic missiles, they have no thrust in terminal stages. Nevertheless they could manage to hit their targets at mid to high supersonic speeds, subject to their flight trajectories.
Zircon is an air breathing jet engined missile. It is powered by a Scramjet engine that has supposedly flown at around 8 Mach speed. Zircon has thrust at it’s terminal phase. So it can sustain the hypersonic speeds during it’s flight. So much so that, Russians claim at denser atmospheric layers, this speed creates a plasma cloud around the missile and makes it invisible to radars.
But myth to one side, Zircon is a formidable weapon. It can maneuver during flight making difficult to intercept.
I hope our Scramjet work, gives it’s fruits and we have a hypersonic scramjet powered missile as soon as possible.
By the way, almost all ballistic missiles achieve hypersonic speeds if they are heavy and fly high enough.
