Yes this is Carnatic vocalist percussive "talam" (time keeping/meter/pace etc) taken to an apex competitive level almost heh.
Carnatic is the generic term given to South Indian traditional music form. It is more conservative to ancient Indian traditions than the north Indian equivalent (Hindustani).
