Research facilities contributes to the national projects in great extends, providing scientific and advanced engineering consultancy and conducting experiments in model or full scales to make sure of the design.

Ata Nutku Model Basin:
Located in Istanbul, withing Istanbul Technical University has been the only model basin of Turkey, conducting following activities.
- Drag& Drift tests in model scale
- Self propulsion tests
- Wake measurement
- Flow monitoring and hull-form optimization
- Cavitation experiments of propellers
- Seakeeping experiments in regular or random waves

The model basin has received new upgrades through major projects funded by Defense Industry Presidency (SSB) :
- Full scale UUV - ROV - Midget Submarine testing and confined construction space with lifting crane
- Acoustic monitoring and measurement systems
- Planar Motion Mechanism, allowing primary maneuvering experiments for model scale.

ITU Large Cavitation Tunnel:

Project has been funded by SSB, designed by Polish CTO under supervision of disclosed Turkish professor, produced by Turkish Gürdesan and locaed in Istanbul Technical University. Expected to be operational by 2021.
The cavitation, unlike as it is seen in pictures, doesn't only consist of the tunnel but also model production facilities and offices as shown within a building.

Underwater Acoustics Laboratory -TUBITAK

TUBITAK Marmara Research Center Materials Institute Underwater Acoustic Laboratory (UAL) has been built in order to develop the critical SONAR technologies in the field of underwater acoustic, as a work package of “National Sonar Wet-End Production and Integration Project for MİLGEM Programme”. Because of lacking such a technology in Turkey, this infrastructure was designed in coordination with Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (UDI) and MİLGEM Project Office (MPO) to develop Wet - End Part of National Sonar and to realize performance tests. And official opening date was 14th March, 2008. Underwater Acoustic Laboratory is initial and unique infrastructure in Turkey to carry out Research&Development, Production, Test and Characterization activities in the field of underwater electro acoustic transducers. In April 2009 Underwater Acoustic Laboratory has been accredited by German Accreditation Agency (DAP - Deutsches Akkreditierungssystem Prüfwesen GMBH). Later, in 2014 TURKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) , being the sole accreditation body in Turkey, has accredited UAL.
The main infrastructure is the acoustically isolated open test tank of 15m x 10m x 7,5m dimensions. Besides, open test tank has high accuracy positioning system in order to position the various sensors and sensor arrays of 100 kg and 3000 kg weight.
Underwater Acoustic Laboratory has been announced as a Designated Institute responsible from National Standards in Turkey in the field of underwater acoustics at 2012 by BIPM ( Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) and became associate member to EURAMET (European Association of National Metrology Institutes) at 2013.

Stability and Maneuverability test basin has commenced in Yıldız Technical University under Maritime application and research center.
The universities in Turkey recently has initiated a programme for application and research centers (Uyg-Ar) which particularly focuses on special fields and recruits people to participate in R&D and application projects specifically.
Images and Videos will be added when officially shared.

Phase-I is completed, the stability-maneuverability tank with wave-making tools is already in use.

The improvement and modernization of the existing laboratory's infrastructure is supported by the Presidency's Decision published in the Official Gazette dated February 18, 2019 and numbered 30690, within the scope of the 2019 Investment Program, Technological Research Sector, by the Strategy and Budget Department.

With the first phase of the project, the experimental pool in the existing laboratory is modernized and equipped with a three-dimensional self-damping irregular directional wave generator, which is not available in our country. Within the scope of the second phase of the project, the Advanced Hydrodynamics Research Center will become one of the leading maritime research centers both in our country and in Europe, with the new ship model test pool and workshops planned to be completed.

In 2019, the walls of the existing pool, measuring 37 m x 31 m, were increased to 2.2 m in accordance with the project purpose. The assembly and tests of the wave generator and wave monitor designed within the scope of the project are completed and it is planned to be operational in the coming months. Thus, three-dimensional experimental studies will be carried out by reflecting the real sea situation.

Maneuvering and hydrodynamic tests of commercial and military vessels, coastal and marine structures, commercial or touristic port structures, offshore platforms, design of submarine pipes and energy lines, planning and development of energy production systems to be made at sea are strategic investments that require the use of advanced technologies. For this reason, this type of laboratories are mostly located in universities of developed countries, physical model studies of researches for strategic investments are carried out and advanced engineering tests are carried out.

Some examples of the experimental studies to be carried out at the Advanced Hydrodynamics Research Center;

– Coastal and Offshore Structures; Port planning, breakwaters, water intake and delivery structures (for thermal, nuclear power plants), pipelines, power transmission lines, coastal protection structures (coastal walls, spurs, successive breakwaters, fortifications), coastal embankment fortifications, berthing structures, etc.
– coastal morphology; Erosion, sand transport, planning, river mouths, delta models etc. in coastal areas.
– Renewable Energy Structures; Marine wind energy fields, wave energy, current energy,
– offshore structures; Oil, natural gas energy platforms,
– Global Climate Change; The effects of sea water level change due to global warming on coastal areas, marine structures, coastal structures, morphology and ecology,
– Disaster Models; Earthquake and Tsunami model studies,
– Captive model tests
– Submarine and surface ships control tests,
– Conveying tests during the return,
– Hydrofoil Performance studies,
– Unmanned Underwater Vehicles experiments (AUV, ROV),
– Linear stability tests of ship models with Infrared Optical Tracking System
– Performance analysis of offshore platforms in rough environment,

With the completion of the project, the research and development activities necessary for the development of all kinds of unmanned sea vehicles, which are becoming increasingly important in the world, will be able to be carried out. In this context, providing R&D services to institutions and organizations engaged in research and product development in the military and scientific field is seen among the most important outputs of the project.

In the second phase of the project, it is planned to build the most modern and comprehensive ship model test pool in Turkey. The dimensions of the pool are 200 m in length, 14 m in width and 8 m in depth, and it will be one of the leading model test pools in Europe. Resistance, propulsion, nautical analyzes of all kinds of ships and maneuvering tests of submarines will be carried out in this dock.

Phase-II is under negotiation, but it is rather expected for a towing tank to be established in Istanbul Teknopark than being under management of an university, it is going to be in top 5 in terms of capabilities (maximum speed, model size etc).

Friday at 14:00, Large Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuvering Test Facility located at the ITU Maslak Campus, will be launched with a ceremony. The Tunnel will be operated by ITU, managed by TRTest, an affiliated company of the SSB.

As expected, Mr. Demir (President of SSB) will be present in there.

This is a big event and capability gain, the media or other Defense news sources are not covering this, but this capability is closely linked to anything going underwater. Thus we may expect to hear some progresses on Torpedo programs.

ITU Large Cavitation Tunnel is now fully operational with all features. Factory Acceptance Tests have been succesfully completely, smoothly.

First run will be held in the incoming days for a project. It will be the first run related to a sector project. There have been many scientific study related run until the FAT.
