Many people don’t know that Brazil is actually right now building its first nuclear-powered attack submarine which will be named “Alvaro Alberto”. It is being built by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) in Rio de Janeiro with the assistance of Naval Group (France). The whole project is worth 8,9$ billion dollars and includes 5 new submarines- 1 nuclear-powered “Alvaro Alberto” and 4 modified Scorpene class diesel-powered submarines.
The first 1700 ton submarine named Riachuelo (S-40) have already been lowered into the sea in the end of 2018 in Rio de Janeiro. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP). In the following years it’s the Humaitá (S-41), the Tonelero (S-42) and Angostura ( S-43) that are expected to enter service too.
On October 21st the assembly of the Nuclear Propulsion Prototype Reactor of the Brazilian Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) was started at the Experimental Center Aramar located in Iperó, São Paulo. The assembly of the reactor will be replicated in the construction of the first Brazilian submarine with nuclear propulsion, the “Álvaro Alberto”. It will be powered by a 48MW reactor and the sub will have a displacement of 6000 tons.
