Turkish independance war was effectively a civil war between to two competing governments the Istanbul and the Ankara government.

Ataturk did not really do a military coup that brought down the sultan like this akp peasant is insisting.

Ottoman Empire loses Ww1 and the Allies begin the occupation and the partition of the empire. Sultan Vahdettin was effectively a powerless puppet whose representative Damat Ferit Pasha signs the treaty of sevres. Many Ottoman officers and soldiers oppose the treaty for being unfair and begin to organise resistance. Ataturk organises the resistance. Resistance in turn makes Ankara the new capital and the seat of government.

Now you have two competing governments one is trying to enforce the treaty of sevres while the other opposes it.

Does not look like Ataturk grabbed an army marched into Istanbul took down the sultan.
