SONATA-II is the successor to the SLQ-200K SONATA (Sea Operational system for Navy Acquisition & Tactical Attack) and is scheduled to be installed on existing ships, starting with the KDDX, as well as on future ships.

The ROKN had previously operated using the U.S.-made APECS system, but in response to the system’s poor performance and the growing threat from North Korea, it completed the development of new naval electronic warfare equipment between 1994 and the early 2000s.

The newly developed SONATA-II will incorporate the latest digital electronics and intelligent algorithms, expanding its detection frequency range and improving detection accuracy. Furthermore, through the advancement of electronic countermeasure technologies, its capability to counter enemy advanced radars and anti-ship missiles is expected to be significantly enhanced.

The 2026 RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific) Task Force consists of approximately 700 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. Its assets include the Aegis destroyer ROKS Jeongjo the Great (DDG, 8,200-ton class), the submarine ROKS Dosan Ahn Chang-ho (SS-III, 3,000-ton class), the tank landing ship ROKS Cheonjabong (LST-II, 4,900-ton class), the frigate ROKS Daejeon (FFG, 3,100-ton class), a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, AW-159 Wildcat maritime operational helicopters, and six Korean Amphibious Assault Vehicles (KAAVs).

At RIMPAC 2026, which features participation from a total of 31 nations, the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy is scheduled to serve as the Combined Forces Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC). This marks the first time an Asian nation will hold integrated command over the combined maritime and land-based naval task forces.
