In a statement made by the Russian Ministry of Defense, it was stated that Genadi Jidko, the commander of the Eastern Military District on the border with China, visited the region.
The statement, which included the information that the S-300 air systems deployed in the Kuril Islands were inspected as part of the visit, it was noted that an exercise was carried out in the region for scenarios in which Russian airspace was violated.
In the statement, it was stated that the air defense systems deployed on the islands for the first time were the S-300V4 system, the latest generation of the S-300 model.
The Russian-made S-300V4 was designed to protect critical facilities and force groups against air attacks.
Kuril dispute between Russia and Japan
At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union annexed the Kuril Islands in 1945, which stretched for about 1,300 kilometers, separating Japan's Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Okhotsk.
After the annexation, because of the dispute over the land area, which is named as "Northern Regions" by Japan, the parties cannot reach a result in the negotiations made between Russia and Japan to sign a peace agreement.
