The possible inclusion of Sweden and Finland in NATO will have “serious” military and political consequences that won’t be left unanswered by Moscow, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has warned.

The persistent attempts by NATO to “draw those countries into the orbit of its interests and opportunistic policies” haven’t gone unnoticed by Russia, Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s spokeswoman, said.

“It’s quite obvious that Finland and Sweden joining NATO … would have serious military and political consequences that would require an adequate response from the Russian side,” she pointed out.

The policy of not being part of any alliances, traditionally pursued by Stockholm and Helsinki, is viewed by Moscow as “an important factor in ensuring stability in northern Europe,” Zakharova added.

NATO has been expressing its satisfaction over what it called deepening cooperation with Finland and Sweden, which “share” the block’s values and contribute to its operations.

At a summit in June, the US-led military alliance vowed to further bolster those ties “in support of our common security, including by crisis management preparation, exercises, and exchanging information and analysis.”

The same statements were repeated during the visit of NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to Stockholm and Helsinki in late October.

Earlier this month, Moscow issued two documents – one addressed to NATO and the other to Washington – demanding guarantees that would assure security for all sides. The proposals included limiting NATO’s buildup near the Russian borders and ruling out the enlargement of the bloc.

Speaking about Moscow’s proposals, Zakharova reiterated that “ruling out the expansion of NATO and the deployment of weapon systems that threaten our security near the Russian borders are going to be the main, key issues at the upcoming talks with the US and NATO.”

Swedish authorities previously decried the Kremlin’s initiative, saying that “rejecting any future expansion of NATO will reduce the opportunities to make independent political choices.” The Finnish government also insisted that it needed to have “national room to maneuver,” including applying for NATO membership.

It’s equally important to point out that Russia is testing these nations and their respons so if these countries are going to feel more safe or secure they need to join NATO. Finland is more exposed, but both of these countries are tested.
With annexation of Crim NATO should have expanded with Finland and Sweden. Lost chance imo.

Its not like Russia can do anything if or when both countries join NATO.

Look at them. Worried to death about Russian advances. They plot and terrorise others for decades. Now they are caught in a different web. Russia this Russia that. China this China that. They have found new foes it seems.

The annexation of Crimea resulted in the creation of the NATO VJTF and the increased commitment of NATO member state.

Russian coercion will not work.

That strikeforce is a joke unless it's unleashed. A more proper respons would have been to add Finland or Sweden to the alliance.

When you look at the NATO members you can see rich small countries that can't even prepare according to the agreements. Denmark can't field any regiment ready for duty. So for countries like Denmark getting F35 is very much a necessity because they don't even spend 2% to have their army ready for duty.

Why does Russia think that it's that powerful ? Only advance it has over Europe is Nukes
Russia is one entity and moves with one word of Putin. Europe and NATO consists of many countries and many decisionsmakers. Making the process from decisions taking to action very very long. We're not talking about days here.

Simply, Russia thinks it is that powerful because it owns NATO by the bloody balls

Man, it is amazing how western countries always try and justify how they are currently superior than Russia, like lool, Putin literally annexed Crimea and controlled massive oil fields and natural resources while all the Western states were speaking about sanctions and how Russia will be stopped. 7 years later, now Putin is preparing to engulf all of Ukraine

Do you guys really didnt think that it was really shameful for a bloody coalition of more than 20 countries headed by President Biden to state that they will hold talks to guarantee Russia's security in January? I mean, it is only one nation which is sanctioned for more than 5 years and is prepaeing to take control of a whole country and yet a group of mighty superpowers of more than 5 to 6 states are literally bowing to PUTIN

the belief that Russia is strong comes from Putin himself. You guys can call him a dictator, asshole, fool, rotten.... etc..... but one thing for sure is that Putin has ambition to restore SSR's glory and this is what is happening rn. Patriotism is necessary for growth. Current globalisation trend ruins that.

Putin is increasing his influence in Africa, raping EU, trying to force Turkey in its fold, increasing influence in Asia etc....
And this is considering that Russian defence indutry and economy have been under major strains recently

IMO, the truly main reason for why Russia and China are raping the West is that their leaders arent bound by the idiotic Western notion of democracy. After all, while democracy is good, when it is weaponsied, it becomes one of the most potent weapons for ruining a state

Sometimes, in order to grow, you need to rule with an Iron fist. China is the best example tbh

NATO combined except Us

Even when you combine entire NATO there is zero chance of success against Russia.

The entire world took notes when US/NATO left Afghanistan empty handed. If you cannot militarily win in Afghanistan be rest assured that winning against Russia is of a different magnitude.

Which European Country apart from UK and France that can give a fight against Russia??

Latvia 🤣
Lithuania 🤣
Poland 🤣
Finland 🤣

They will all get steam rolled.

As long as they could halt Russia to a halt that's enough until US aid came to finish it off.

You wish. The US/NATO couldn't win any wars in recent history. Name one war that the US started ended in victory.
Name one war Pakistan won. None.

OTOH:
WW1
WW2
Cold War
Gulf war

All ended in ABSOLUTE US victory.

Bro, you're missing my point. Thus is nothing to do with NATO membership.

People like to think that Russian coercion would result a NATO folding up in front of the Kremlin while it's actually the opposite.

The more Russia push, the harder NATO resolve will be. If it's not because of the '14 Crimean annexation, there will be no VJTF

Problem is the U.S. is getting nothing done to prevent Russia's growth, Eventually the Germans will cave in with purchasing NS2 Gas screwing Ukraine even more from their current billion dollar gas transit deals to the point that it will be a country that might be even more poor than an African one since they are already 1st place in beating Kosovo as poorest country in Europe and that is not a joke either. They are working on the power to siberia gas plan to power Mongolia and China, setting up a gas line project for the middle east. Also thanks to Israel's paranoai of its surrounding neighbors they are blocking the UAE's plans for oil transfer to Europe which of course the Russians can take advantage of this by trading their Arctic oil to Europe because of course besides Ukraine and China there is also alot of shit going on in the Arctic that they are doing which barely gets mentioned on the news.

Europeans withdraw their support in funding the free syrian army leaving Turkey and the UAE as their current supporters because the thing is there was a proposed oil line project from the UAE to Europe but we all know whos involvement stopped this from happening.. And Venezuela for having a good amount of oil, a coup was stopped by Russia. Also Lavrov is scheduling a meeting with the Indians and Chinese to replace SWIFT and even want to propose a Quantum communication node project with the BRICS countries on trade relations for secure talks. If they are serious about invasions as everyone thinks they are it would be better for them to do it with a better economy like with their proposed plans than any day or month or year now.

Eh? In a conventional war, NATO would crush Russia so hard it wouldn't even be funny. Russia's only hope would be using nukes for MAD.

Afghanistan was an occupation gone badly because NATO had no interest in babysitting the nation anymore. In conventional warfare in Afghanistan, the Taliban got steamrolled every single time and it wasn't even close. And a war with Russia would be a conventional one not a jihadist shooting gallery.

Not that Russia would do anything if Sweden and Finland were to join NATO. Unlike Ukraine, both are EU members and Putin knows what the response would be. This is just Maria Zakharova blabbing nonsense as usual while her superiors watch NATO's reaction to her statements.

Russia can steamroll through Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and etc. but once they reach that Polish border their advance would be halted. Poland has a pretty big military and is only going to be expanding, to 300,000 active personnel.

Poland + Ukraine + Baltic states alone have nearly 400,000 active personnel, Russia is not gonna steamroll through that front alone
