Roll out Polish Air Force Saab 340 AEW&C
On 29 September 2023, Saab unveiled the first of two Saab 340 Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Siły Powietrzne RP (Polish Air Force). In July this year, the Polish Ministry of Defence (MoD) officially confirmed a contract to acquire the AEW&C capability.
Two months after the order, the first Saab 340 AEW&C with serial 3401 was officially presented to a Polish Air Force delegation. The early warning aircraft will provide Poland’s armed forces with a national asset to reinforce territorial integrity and national security. The second Saab 340 AEW&C will definitely be serial 3402 and delivery of the aircraft is scheduled for 2023-2024.
The Saab 340s are both former United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAE AF) AEW&C platforms that were obtained from the Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force) in 2010 and were returned to Sweden in 2020 after delivery of the Saab GlobalEye to the UAE AF.
Scramble Magazine first reported in May 2023 that Poland was in talks with Sweden to acquire Saab Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft and in July the order for two aircraft was confirmed. The tie-up of both platforms, c/n 340B-409 (ex UAE AF 1332 and Swedish Air Force 100005) and c/n 340B-431 (ex UAE AF 1331 and Swedish Air Force 100006), is not known yet."
