I would ban foreign social media altogather. I did warn years ago when I saw even TRT pimping their social media accounts when they came out. It is time for us to make our own and not let even small leaks in.

They have 17x the population we have hence the more power to demand compliance. They also have local alternatives to choose from which we don't. We have to create local alternatives immediately as they are our life savers.

Our usage generates way, WAY more revenue for them though. You can't even use Twitter and YouTube in China, let alone advertise on it.
I remember reading on a report published by Google exactly 1 year ago, that they were boasting on the profits from the Turkish market equaling to 6-point something of the GDP of the entire country.

Under peacetime conditions you may think that allowing them is plausable but peacetime is not indefinite. Socialmedia gets weaponized and using it becomes surrendering to the enemy. Foreign socialmedia is like poison administered in small doses, it will make you sick and you won't even know it. SM should be considered as an utility that must be served by the public sector and can be charged a small amount by telecom companies and be served with a small dose of commercials. Remember if they are not selling a product the product is you.

I get your viewpoint, and you're right about it. We are aiming for different, but equally beneficial things.

You propose we propagate our own social media services to shield our people from the outside influence of the harm actors. I say we "influence" the foreign social media services to propagate our way of thinking using various methods, like how the Chinese princesses turned our lads to the way of the mankurts.

There's a place for both of those ways. Both should be executed with grace, post-haste.

Globalization is a thing also in the cyber space. You can't limit globalization in social media and media at all unless you want to be at the level of North Korea. Look at how many Turks are using X/Twitter, Meta, Google services. They are not using it to watch Ahmet and Mehmet but to have a touch with humans and their content all around the world. Who would watch Mehmet's show or TRT while there are much more, wider variety and better overall content creators around the world? If you decide to up the game how would you bring these content creators to your platform? Are you going to pay them from the State's budget? This will not work at all.

Instead of becoming more authoritarian Turkiye should concentrate on good foreign policy, business investments in the field and heavier lobby initiatives. This is how the world works.

We tap into second mover advantage which means low starting costs. Foreign media creators already modify their content to target Turkish speakers and they can profit from Turkish ad networks. We have a sizable population and and a sizable foreign audience.
