Somalia, easternmost country of Africa, on the Horn of Africa. It extends from just south of the Equator northward to the Gulf of Aden and occupies an important geopolitical position between sub-Saharan Africa and the countries of Arabia and southwestern Asia. The capital, Mogadishu, is located just north of the Equator on the Indian Ocean.

Somalia is a country of geographic extremes. The climate is mainly dry and hot, with landscapes of thornbush savanna and semidesert, and the inhabitants of Somalia have developed equally demanding economic survival strategies. Apart from a mountainous coastal zone in the north and several pronounced river valleys, most of the country is extremely flat, with few natural barriers to restrict the mobility of the nomads and their livestock. The Somali people are clan-based Muslims, and about three-fifths follow a mobile way of life, pursuing nomadic pastoralism or agropastoralism.

The Republic of Somalia was formed in 1960 by the federation of a former Italian colony and a British protectorate. Mohamed Siad Barre (Maxamed Siyaad Barre) held dictatorial rule over the country from October 1969 until January 1991, when he was overthrown in a bloody civil war waged by clan-based guerrillas. After Siad’s fall from power, warfare continued and the country lacked an effective centralized government—problems that persisted into the 21st century. Moreover, a de facto government declared the formation of an independent Republic of Somaliland in the north in 1991. Similarly, in 1998 the autonomous region of Puntland (the Puntland State of Somalia) was self-proclaimed in the northeast.

Decades of civil hostilities have virtually destroyed Somalia’s economy and infrastructure and split the country into areas under the rule of various entities. When Somalia’s tenuous transitional administration handed power to a new government in 2012, the newly declared Federal Republic of Somalia had only limited control over the country. There was, however, hope that the new government would usher in a new era, one in which peace would be achieved and Somalis could focus on rebuilding their country.

Somali government cuts diplomatic ties with Kenya

The leaders of Somalia and Kenya have previously held meetings to resolve tensions between the two countries

The federal government of Somalia has cut diplomatic ties with neighbouring Kenya.
It has recalled all its diplomats from Nairobi and given Kenyan diplomats in Mogadishu seven days to leave the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information Osman Abukar Dubbe on state media.
"The Somali government, based on its national sovereignty guaranteed by international law and order, and fulfilling its constitutional duty to safeguard the nationhood, unity and stability of the country, has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Kenyan government," he said.

The decision comes after Somalia submitted a letter of protest against Kenya to Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who is also chair of the regional bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Somalia recently accused Kenya of meddling in its internal affairs.

AC-130W Stinger II conducts live fire exercise in Somalia

1000x664_q95.jpg

The AC-130W Stinger II is conducting air operations over Somalia under Joint Task Force – Quartz in support of Operation OCTAVE QUARTZ. The mission of OOQ is to reposition U.S. DOD personnel from Somalia to other locations in East Africa.
Mission
The AC-130W Stinger II primary missions are close air support and air interdiction. Close air support missions include troops in contact, convoy escort and point air defense. Air interdiction missions are conducted against preplanned targets or targets of opportunity and include strike coordination and reconnaissance.

Features
The aircraft is a highly modified C-130H featuring improved navigation, threat detection, countermeasures, and communication suites. All AC-130W aircraft are modified with a precision strike package to perform the gunship mission.
Modifications to the AC-130W include a mission management console, communications suite, two electro-optical/infrared sensors, fire control equipment, stand-off precision guided munitions, one side-firing, trainable 30mm gun capable of firing 200 rounds per minute, and one side-firing, trainable 105mm cannon. The mission management system will fuse sensor, communication, environment, order of battle and threat information into a common operating picture. The AC-130W Stinger II Precision Strike Package modification provides ground forces an expeditionary, persistent direct fires platform that delivers precision low-yield munitions, ideally suited for close air support and urban operations.
Background
Lessons learned from overseas contingency operations have modified the near-term needs of U.S. Special Operations Command and Special Operations Forces fire support requirements. In July 2007, the USSOCOM Commander declared the need to grow the gunship fleet. The commander's intent was not to replace current AC-130s, but rather to augment existing combat capability.

In May 2012, the MC-130W Dragon Spear was renamed the AC-130W Stinger II. The AC-130W Stinger II Project was developed to increase the precision fires capacity available for Overseas Contingency Operations. USSOCOM used proven rapid acquisition principles and combat proven technology to field the Precision Strike Package on the AC-130W Stinger II. It took less than 18 months from the first flight of a prototype modified aircraft to deployment to Operation New Dawn. AC-130W gunships have since been employed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Somali commandos complete military training in Turkey

Turkish military aircraft carrying a contingent of Somali commandos who had completed their training in Turkey landed in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Monday.

Somali Defense Minister Hassan Mohomed Amardanbe, Army Chief Gen. Odawa Yusuf Rageh and other senior officials welcomed the troops at Adan Adde International Airport, according to Somalian national television.

The trainees will join the famous and most effective army force called Gorgor (The Eagles) in the country, all trained by Turkey.
Turkey has been a reliable partner in rebuilding Somalia across all sectors, Abdullahi Ahmed Sheikh, a former Somali special forces commander, told Anadolu Agency (AA) by phone.

"Apart from infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and roads, Turkey has been a crucial strategic partner in training and equipping Somali troops, particularly the Gorgor Commando Brigade of the national army and the Haramcad (Cheetah) Special Police Unit," Sheikh added.

Turkey provided special commando training to 150 Somali soldiers as part of a military cooperation deal between the two countries.
The training of the Somali Armed Forces soldiers took place at Turkey's Counterterrorism Training and Exercise Center in the southwestern province of Isparta, according to a statement by the Turkish Defense Ministry.

Last August, Turkish Ambassador to Mogadishu Mehmet Yılmaz said that Turkey is on track to train one-third of Somalia's military forces, totaling around 15,000-16,000 personnel.

Relations between Turkey and the Horn of Africa nation have been historically strong and picked up pace after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made an official visit in 2011, the only visit by a non-African leader to Somalia in 20 years. Turkey has also continued its support to Somalia with humanitarian aid in the health, education and security sectors.

Turkey's vast aid effort at the height of the 2011 famine endeared the country to many Somali people, and it has continued to provide aid, much of it from private companies. Turkish organizations have also built schools, hospitals and infrastructure and have provided scholarships for Somalis to study in Turkey.

As the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has extensive experience fighting terrorists, Turkish training of the Somali military is helpful in countering Somalia's own terrorist threats.

Turkey’s biggest overseas military training base, which was inaugurated in 2017, is located in Somalia and is also among the largest foreign-run military centers in the country.

Somalia plunged into chaos after the 1991 overthrow of President Siad Barre's military regime, leading to years of clan warfare followed by the rise of the al-Shabab terrorist group, which once controlled large parts of the country and the capital.

After being pushed out of its main bastions by the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) in 2011, the terrorist group has continued to wage war against the government, with regular attacks on Mogadishu and other East African countries, including Uganda and Kenya.

Somali Ground Forces announced that 76 Ash-Shabaab terrorists were killed in attacks on present-day Barire & Awdhegle military bases. Ash-Shabaab claimed to have killed 47 soldiers, seized the Barire base, and seized 6 vehicles and other military equipment.

I've seen videos from both sides (not going to post due to graphic content) and I can say that Ash-Shabaab's claim seems to be very overstated or with other words fabrication while I saw footage from Awdhiigle where countless terrorists are dead on the street.

Some of the soldiers participated in the defence received training in Turkey.

Possible civil war in Somalia

Anti-Farmajo opponents in which tribal forces and soldiers changed sides control all the districts in north Mogadishu. Ditches and barricades have been created against possible interventions.

There are reports about troops being mobilized to intervene but not confirmed.

Somali president calls election in bid to ease tensions

Somalia’s president called early Wednesday for elections in a bid to ease the current political tensions in the country.

"We have always been committed to conducting unconditional elections anchored on the 17 September 2020 agreement and the recommendations of the 16 February 2021 Baidoa Technical Committee,” said Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, addressing the nation on national television.

To fulfil elections based on these agreements, he said, "I call upon all parties in Somalia to bring to a halt everything that is a threat to the stability of our country, politicization of the forces, divisions and vandalism.”

Mohamed has accused foreign governments and individuals of attempting to destabilize the country.

"Unfortunately, our resolve was frustrated by a few individuals and foreign governments whose aim remained destabilizing Somalia to cause destruction and partition it to place us in a constitutional crisis,” he said.

He will address the country's parliament on Saturday.

The capital Mogadishu has witnessed violence and displacement among the public after government forces and pro-opposition soldiers clashed in parts of the city.

The country was thrown into a political and election stalemate after Mohamed’s four-year term ended on Feb. 8 this year and parliament extended his mandate and that of the president for two more years.
